Nam et ipsa scientia potestas est (And thus knowledge itself is power)
-- Sir Francis Bacon.
Since Tangled Bank has gone the way of the Dodo (Passenger Pigeon, Carolina Parakeet, Ivory-Billed Woodpecker -- name your favorite extinct species here) and will probably never be seen again, despite promises to the contrary, there is a huge hole in the science writing blogosphere. A hole that must be filled. So I am proposing to do just that: I am proposing to start a new science blog carnival, Scientia, which will be be THE science blog writing carnival.
The purpose of this new blog carnival is to provide a public platform that celebrates the best science writing for the public that has been published recently in the blogosphere, and its topics will range from basic to applied sciences; from physics, chemistry and biology to pharmacology and medicine. Scientia will be published on Mondays of the first and third week of each month, starting in April, and just to get things started, I will host the first edition or two of this blog carnival while it gains some publicity and momentum. Of course, I need your help. I am seeking publicity, submissions and hosts for upcoming editions of this blog carnival. I also would welcome your Scientia logos for advertising and publicity purposes, and even a 500-pixel wide Scientia banner and other images (perhaps one for each category?) that hosts might wish to use to promote and decorate their editions of Scientia.
To send submissions to Scientia, either use this automated submission form or send it directly to ScientiaBlogCarnival at gmail. Be sure to include the URL or "permalink", the essay title and a brief summary.

I was just thinking that I should submit my latest blog entry somewhere, but with Tangled Bank having (apparently) been sprayed with herbicide, I couldn't work out where to send it. You're the answer to my prayers!
Quiche Moraine Dot Com will be happy to host an edition of this wonderful new blog carnival.
This is very interesting. We would be interested in writing an article for you. However, I believe we would like to submit a work which is tailored for your site. Please contact me with a bit more information.
Thanks,
Brendan

Name sounds a bit too close to Scientiae: http://scientiae-carnival.blogspot.com/.
bob -- does this make me an angel? or .. ahem .. an angle?
greg -- thanks. let me know which dates are most convenient for you and i'll sign you up.
brendan -- the requirements are listed above, specific questions are welcome here, though, since others will probably have the same questions.
anon -- hrm. wonders never cease, do they? google missed that carnival. well, i like this name just fine and think it is very descriptive and appropriate, but i might modify it if someone suggests a reasonable alternative.
Well, as it sounds pretty close to the theme of The Open Laboratory, why not make it the Open Lab carnival? With so many submissions already, it would be a good way to showcase them and encourage more submissions.
Well, I would have prayed at the Church of the Flying Molecules, but their membership seems rather diffuse.
Sion 'ttila. Geddit?
Since our blog is all about encouraging better science communication to the public and policy makers about science, we'd love to know more about hosting an upcoming carnival!
Hi Grrl -- sorry Google missed the Scientiae carnival, although it seems to come up okay with the e on the end. The carnival has been going strong since March 2007 with monthly carnivals due on the 1st of the month. The carnival website can be found at http://scientiae-carnival.blogspot.com/.
I was excited to hear Scientiae come up a lot at ScienceOnline09, Bora was nice enough to list it as a resource here. Scientiae has also appeared in print as a resource for women in STEM (like here).
I don't have an alternative name to offer you, and I can appreciate how much Scientia works as a great name for the carnival proposed. However, if I can help with differentiating the two carnivals so we both get the traffic we want, just let me know. You know where to find me. :-)
Make sure that you contact the Nature Blog Network if you haven't done so. They maintain a list of dozens of blog carnivals, a list that many use when trying to submit or search for interesting articles. Good luck, and I look forward to reading this!
Since the new carnival is supposed to emphasize science writing for the public, how about simply expanding the name to Scientia Pro Publica -- Science for the People?
I think it would be kind of a bummer to have two carnivals with such similar names. I like chezjake's suggestion.
Scientiae and the proposed Scientia are worthwhile carnivals that we should really try not to confuse. I second chezjake suggestion
How about "carniscience" - we'll laugh, we'll sci....
Perhaps "Pierides"? A trifle obscure, but including a reference to both birds and the muses (and thus, the muse of Science, Urania).
How about "scientell" ?
I actually came up with the same idea (and reasoning as K) The Open Laboratory Carnival...since the themes are so similar.
I also like Scientia Pro Publica -- cute.
OR how about the Science Cafe Carnival -- since science cafes are about public outreach...science cafe isn't trademarked is it?
BTW, I love this idea. I can't wait to really promote it among black blogs -- (I've been raising a little stir among my folks about the lack of science blog appreciation. This might make a great little gift.)
i want to thank everyone for your great suggestions for altering the name of this blog carnival .. just a little so it can be distinguished from scientiae. i have decided to rename this carnival "Scientia Pro Publica -- Science for the People" as per chezjake's suggestion. thanks for your help!
Wow, awesome. Thanks, grrl.
