The Burning Lake, May 11, 2055
I don't know what Matt said to dad, but whatever it was, it didn't take long. I had a quick shower downstairs and changed clothes, thinking to head back to university. By the time I got back upstairs, Jon had arrived. He had been in the Arctic doing community outreach work for a mining company and now he was in the kitchen talking to dad. For a second I stood at the top of the stairs watching them.
Jon looked incredibly straight --- like an advertisement for the chamber of…

More melt excitement in the arctic. An unprecedented summer cyclone in the arctic has clobbered sea ice already tracking at record daily low area (58 days in a row now) and near record daily low extent measurements. As always, the go-to place for sea ice watching and discussion is Neven's:
Arctic storm part 3: detachment - Arctic Sea Ice.
Yes, the storm is weather, but it is unprecedented weather. It is hitting the ice during a pronounced, long term and accelerating downward trend. Though Wattsians will excuse any new records as the result of weather, what we are seeing is unquestionably…

Edie, May 11, 2055
I hate it when I find myself doing something and I don't know why. Somehow that seems to happen a lot around my brother, Matt. This time he wanted me to accompany him on a visit to his fiancee, Adelle. I didn't know why and frankly, I didn't really care at the time. My other brother Jon was supposed to be arriving back from the North today, but Matt's invitation gave me a chance to ride in his new car. Usually I get around on bike and foot, so the Faraday was a treat.
Adelle lived on the far…

As regulars are well aware, much (some periods, all!) of the content here is not produced by me, but by H. E. Taylor (het) in the form of the weekly global warming news roundup. Well, we are in for some more regular content in the form of his latest novel, The Bottleneck Years. The text below introduces this endeavor and will be immediately followed by the table of contents and chapter 0.
I thank him for allowing his work to be reproduced here!
Fair Warning

Some interesting goings-on in the cryosphere these days.
In this chart (click the link for an interactive, larger resolution version) from the cryosphere today we can see that we are on the 45th day in a row of daily record lows in sea ice area.
Note that this is area which is different from extent. Area refers to the actual ice cover, I am not sure of the details of how that is defined in practice, whereas extent refers to any ocean surface that contains 15% or more ice cover. Again, there will be technical details I am not familiar with for determining the edges of extent (e.g. grid size…

Hopping down the bunny trail comes the (not) surprising news that law enforcement investigating the CRU email scandal (aka Climategate, aka Swifthack) have concluded that the email servers were hacked and this is not the imagined whistle blower the WUWT and Curry crowd like to pretend. Though they can not identify the perp, they do conclude that:
“However, as a result of our enquiries, we can say that the data breach was the result of a sophisticated and carefully orchestrated attack on the CRU’s data files, carried out remotely via the internet. The offenders used methods common in unlawful…
This is not my opinion! But forget about damning with faint praise, given the source this is damning with high praise.
Obama’s negotiator, Todd Stern, will be here today. They have kept the exact same principles and negotiating stance as President George Bush did for eight years. Obama has carried on Bush’s legacy. So, as skeptics, we tip our hat to President Obama in helping crush and continue to defeat the United Nations process. Obama has been a great friend of global warming skeptics at these conferences. Obama has problems, you know, for us, because he’s going through the EPA regulatory…
"Show me the code!" This is the rallying cry of climate "skeptics" everywhere and the foundation of the numerous climate conspiracy insinuations hurled around the blogosphere.
Well, apparently what is good for the goose, the infamous Hockeystick, is not so good for the gander, the Wegman Report.
Please see John Mashey's article on Desmog Blog.
Where is the code promised to Waxman almost 6 years ago? Dr. Mann's code was written for a research paper in 1999. Wegman's was used for a high-profile Congressional report widely publicized by Reps. Joe Barton and Ed Whitfield, announced in the Wall…
