Spider-Man 3 is so going to rock

I saw the trailer for Spiderman 3 last night. The comic geek in me is starting to get excited, because the movie looks like it's going to be really, really good, perhaps the best Spider-Man movie so far. It looks as though Venom, the Sandman, and Harry Osbourne, Jr. taking up where his dad (the Green Goblin) left off will all be making an appearance. In case you missed it:

I can't wait until May 4.

I saw Spider-Man Three this weekend. I liked it. A lot. The critics have been panning it pretty severely, but they are wrong. They've been complaining that there is too much CGI, that there are too many supervillains, and that the story is unconvincing. Actually, I was impressed by how…
I'm not in the mood for a long blog entry today, so allow me simply to echo Orac's thoughts on the debut of the trailer for Spider-Man 3. It does, indeed, appear that it will rock. The feature villain this time around is Sandman. I always liked him in the comic books. As I recall, he shows up…
James Kakalios gets to use the latest Spider-Man movie as an excuse to explain the physics of granular materials in the New York Times. Good thing they didn't ask a biologist about Sandman … all I could think about was that there was no way a loose aggregate of coarse sand would be able to mimic…
Anybody still read newspaper comics these days? I do, but sadly for the newspaper business I read them online. Worse, usually in the context of people making fun of them. On the other hand, there are a few gems out there. Is Spider-Man one of those gems? Uh... Well, Shakespeare it ain't. But…

May 4? Already? Wow.

I guess it's been a while since the last one.

S-M 2 was an unusual movie in that it was one where the sequel was arguably better than the orignial.

Of course, you could say the same thing about X-Men 2, but X-Men 3 wasn't quite up to the standard of the first two....

Oh damn. It looks dark. I love the darker comic themes and they translate well to film.

Venom was always one of my favorite story lines in the Spidey comics. I still have the whole Secret Wars books.

Yeah, Spiderman 2 came out in 2004, while I was abroad. I hope they move Vemon out to Movie 4. They can deal with Black Suit Evilness all they want here, but with both Osborne and Sandman, it's already a full movie. I really hope they're just putting the Evil Suit in Movie 3 to set up Venom in 4. They're setting up Eddie Brock in 3, too, and I think I saw a Gwen Stacy there for about 3 frames.

I am thrilled that Venom is going to show up. I'm not at all surprised that he, or more appropriately, it, is in this movie. It is one of the most popular villians in SM, if not all of Marvel, the same way that Green Gobbo is one of the most important ones to the SM storyline. I think Venom will be in the next movie, with this one servind as more of an origin story for the big baddie. The suit may come off this time, and may latch on to another body as the lead in for the next sequal. Just my guess.

On the other hand, the prior Spiderman movies at least nodded toward the print continuity... Green Goblin and Doc Ock were original Spidey villians. I'm not sure about Sandman, but he's at least an old-timer. (And Spidey's always had an especially tough time with elemental types, which gives him a chance to use his brains!) Venom, on the other hand, emerged from the *$%#@!$ Beyonder mega-plot, which was much more recent. I wonder how they'll retcon its origin? Maybe another Osborne experiment....

Really? Sandman? It's like making a Superman movie with Mr. Myxlplyx as the main bad guy. Pretty lame.

I beg to differ. Written well, the Sandman is a very formidable villain, an he's been one of Spider-Man's foes since The Amazing Spider-Man #4. He's taken on the Fantastic Four (as part of The Frightful Four), and been a regular fixture in the Marvel Universe. He's also flipped back and forth between being good and evil, which adds a nice level of moral ambiguity to him.

I'm not a big Venom fan, either, but in this case it looks as though the film will only treat the part where Peter Parker first the symbiote costume and not where the symbiote costume possessed Eddie Brock. Of course, that could set up a Spider-Man 4 where Venom is the main villain.

I'm with Orac on this one. For those of us who've been reading Spiderman since the beginning, Sandman is one of the quintessential villains, like Dr. Octopus or Green Goblin. And if anything, he should be even more impressive on screen than Octopus was in the second film.
