Off to New York

Again, I'm speaking tonight at SUNY-Purchase, aka Purchase College of the State University of New York. Then I'll be in New York for a couple of days, followed by Atlanta. Blogging could be a mite spotty, but I know you'll all bear with me.

This wasn't the post I wanted to write about the ASM conference. There's been lots of great science discussed (I've tried to tweet some of it, but the wifi in both the conference center and my hotel have been spotty, so I've not had a chance to write anything comprehensive). Instead, I'm ticked off…
Since somebody asks nearly every time I mention my TED@NYC appearance back in October, I can now confirm that I will not be speaking at TED this year. Which I found out the same way as everybody else: when the full speaker list for this year's TED was released today. If you're curious about the…
I'm off today for North Carolina, where I'll be doing some library research, some talks at UNC and at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center, and then a couple of sessions at Science Online. Expect blogging to be spotty, and I hope to see you at #scio11.
This is one of those "what I had for lunch web log entries." Old fashioned style, and I'm not talking about the drink. Probably. You'll notice that I've not blogged for half a month. For the last three months, Amanda, Huxley, and I have been engaged in a very time consuming operation. We fixed…

It's nice to see you're coming back up to Amherst on April 20th! Hampshire College, my very own stomping ground! I look forward to meeting you again.

I hope you give a talk at my undergrad alma mater, SUNY Stony Brook, some day.

It's also where Marburger worked before he, uh, left the reality based community.

I bet that would burn.

Hey, I was at the lecture tonight at Suny Purchase( I'm the guy who asked you about preaching to the choir at the end :-) )

I thought it was very eye opening and thought provoking, and I really enjoyed it, thanks for coming!

Thanks for the comments. First, I'd love to talk at Stony Brook but have not yet received an invite. That's what really determines where I go--simple levels of interest.

I'm glad to be visiting Amherst again. It's a wonderful little pocket of science and intellectual activity, and a beautiful town. As for SUNY Purchase--I thought it went well. I tried out some new things with visuals, including using several slides to deliberately increase the humor factor, and that seems to have been very successful. I went home (er, back to my hotel) that night thinking it had been a great event. Huge crowd too, but then, it was something of a captive audience as hundreds of freshmen were required to attend.....
