The Australian cyclone season this year has been very quiet, and was supposed to be over April 30.
Never mind. Cyclone Pierre has other ideas.
This storm is now heading towards the populous Queensland region, and forecast to intensify slowly but steadily at this point. It bears serious watching.....

Earlier today, it looked like we were going to have a very intense cyclone off the northwestern coast of Australia. Now it looks worse: Cyclone George has turned south and is expected to strike the Pilbara region somewhere between Onslow and Port Hedland in the next 24 to 36 hours.

If it hits around Cooktown, that is not really a populous region. But if it hits Cairns or south, there is a substantial population.
Gotcha...I guess I just meant populous by comparison with northwestern Australia where a lot of cyclones strike.....
