Introducing Cyclone Pierre, Another Storm Out of Season

The Australian cyclone season this year has been very quiet, and was supposed to be over April 30.

Never mind. Cyclone Pierre has other ideas.

This storm is now heading towards the populous Queensland region, and forecast to intensify slowly but steadily at this point. It bears serious watching.....

That's what CNN is suggesting. This puts the catastrophe at tsunami scale. And it suggests that Nargis could rank among the top three or four most deadly cyclones of modern times. My god.

The Australian has a daily column called Cut and Paste which should more properly be titled Quote Mining.

If it hits around Cooktown, that is not really a populous region. But if it hits Cairns or south, there is a substantial population.

Gotcha...I guess I just meant populous by comparison with northwestern Australia where a lot of cyclones strike.....
