Russia Pretends To Claim The Arctic: They should've known better...

...or at least picked a B rate movie...

In an apparent attempt to "sex up" a news program, the TV station has been caught passing off footage from the 1997 Hollywood blockbuster Titanic as a real-life report on the Kremlin's recent attempt to stake its claim to the riches of the Arctic Ocean.

While I'm all for appealing to the general public, there's a stark contrast between sexing up science and ripping off the highest grossing film of all time. Someone had to notice and in this case it was Finnish 13 year old Waltteri Seretin:

I have heard that they don't always tell the truth in Russia but I didn't think they could have screwed it up that badly.

Of course, we still think they really put a titanium flag down there. Maybe.

For your consideration: Two possible, if not probable, future scenarios for the human race should the business of fossil fuel combustion continue as usual for the next few decades. The first, an ABC-TV special that aired this Tuesday night, "Earth 2100." The second, a film by UK documentarian…
Last weekend I attended the annual North Carolina sci-shindig (called ScienceOnline2010 this year), and it was the best iteration of the conference yet. I am still reeling from everything that happened during the three days I was there. Rather than post a session-by-session discussion of what…
This morning, a plethora of Sizzle reviews will saturate Scienceblogs. I've no doubt that the film's science will be thoroughly dissected by more informed reviewers than I. So I'm going to steer clear of temperature trends and timetables, and instead consider how the film pitches its message.…
Don't blame me for not pointing it out sooner, but I have only seen Titanic once and as I recall it was an excruciating experience. Luckily, Leonardo is redeeming himself (more later). The Russian expedition planting a flag on the Arctic floor seems to be plagued with further controversy.…

I think I can see the flag, right there on the top of the...giant ship? Is that, in fact, where the titanic went down? I heard it was cold water, but come on, who would take a cruise to the arctic?

Stay Classy, Russia.

See my post here talking about how the geology of the Arctic is all related with Russia's recent submarine territoriality.

Looks like they are claiming (officially to the UN) that since a piece of crust used to be part of the Siberian shelf (but rifted away >30 million years ago) should be theirs, which would extend their sea floor rights significantly.

It's a fascinating 'intersection' of plate tectonics, earth resources, and geopolitics.

A local media critic show in Australia points out that the Russians themselves added the Titanic footage, and Reuters merely passed it on to the outlets. Reuters apologised when this was outed.

This is a very interesting picture and very interesting information! But for some particular reason I dont believe everything tay you are saying because.....I am one of the poeple that was on the ship of the titanic! So if you need anymore information then ask for isabella trunoty. Thank you for your time!
