Devastating news from my neighborhood in North Carolina...
Eve Carson, the fourth female student body president of UNC-CH, 22 yr old pre-med senior double majoring in political science and biology, recipient of the university's prestigious Morehead Scholarship and member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, was shot and killed in a suburban neighborhood near campus.
Our community lost a bright, engaged, and promising young woman in an act of senseless violence. I am deeply saddened by this loss and my heart goes out to her family.

Eve Carson | student body president | University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
This photo was taken on Monday, 3 March. Eve was shot less than 36 hours later. The entire campus, community and alumni mourn her death. She had a ethic of public service so strongly symbolized in her response to why…
It's been a roller coaster of a week for Charles E Jordan High School in Durham, North Carolina. (Wikipedia history here).
As we noted earlier this week, Jordan's Shivani Sud took first prize in the Intel Science Talent Search for her work on biochemical markers of stage II colon cancer. The Intel…
Much hoo-hah in the local fishwrapper regarding the installation yesterday of Dr Holden Thorp as Chancellor of the state's flagship university, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (installation address here). Thorp has brought a large degree of enthusiasm and optimism to Chapel Hill…
Today is World AIDS Day but I wish to relay the need for a different kind of help.
Terra Sigillata has just learned that HIV/AIDS researcher Dr Sonia Napravnik and her daughter Sophia were among those whose apartments were destroyed by fire Wednesday night in Carrboro, NC. Sonia is a research…
Incredibly sad and senseless. I wonder if it was a random "car jacking" or if she knew her assailant. Either way it is a horrific tragedy.
Two intelligent, beautiful, promising young women were murdered within days of each other, one at UNC, the other at Auburn U. Apparently, apart from the above, they also share Georgia as their home state, and had their cars stolen and/or tourched.
I'm not familiar with the Auburn University area, but I am with Chapel Hill, which is upscale and supposed to be 'safe'. There is no safe, and we all have to use our best judgement as we lead our lives.
What a complete tragic loss...
Senseless, indeed - there's nothing I can say but I put together some local links for those interested.
As Linda alludes to, this is the kind of thing you might expect to have happened at the nearby universities in Raleigh or Durham - certainly not in "safe" Chapel Hill.
Just an addition,
I in no way mean to 'allude' that either Durham or Raleigh are unsafe areas. They are all very close to each other, and for the most part, lovely, especially Duke University.
Apologies, Linda, for any misrepresentation - my intention was to note that Raleigh and Durham each experience a couple to several dozen murders per year while Chapel Hill is usually at 0 to 3. Agreed that the area is lovely as are each of its 14 universities and community colleges.
re: "...several dozen murders per year..."
And yet, a single blurb on the local news is all the media that most of them ever get.
