I Don't Understand

Devastating news from my neighborhood in North Carolina...

i-36acda14288801b3fbdabc6e044ad650-art.eve.carson.unc.jpgEve Carson, the fourth female student body president of UNC-CH, 22 yr old pre-med senior double majoring in political science and biology, recipient of the university's prestigious Morehead Scholarship and member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, was shot and killed in a suburban neighborhood near campus.

Our community lost a bright, engaged, and promising young woman in an act of senseless violence. I am deeply saddened by this loss and my heart goes out to her family.

More like this

Incredibly sad and senseless. I wonder if it was a random "car jacking" or if she knew her assailant. Either way it is a horrific tragedy.

Two intelligent, beautiful, promising young women were murdered within days of each other, one at UNC, the other at Auburn U. Apparently, apart from the above, they also share Georgia as their home state, and had their cars stolen and/or tourched.
I'm not familiar with the Auburn University area, but I am with Chapel Hill, which is upscale and supposed to be 'safe'. There is no safe, and we all have to use our best judgement as we lead our lives.
What a complete tragic loss...

Senseless, indeed - there's nothing I can say but I put together some local links for those interested.

As Linda alludes to, this is the kind of thing you might expect to have happened at the nearby universities in Raleigh or Durham - certainly not in "safe" Chapel Hill.

Just an addition,
I in no way mean to 'allude' that either Durham or Raleigh are unsafe areas. They are all very close to each other, and for the most part, lovely, especially Duke University.

Apologies, Linda, for any misrepresentation - my intention was to note that Raleigh and Durham each experience a couple to several dozen murders per year while Chapel Hill is usually at 0 to 3. Agreed that the area is lovely as are each of its 14 universities and community colleges.

re: "...several dozen murders per year..."

And yet, a single blurb on the local news is all the media that most of them ever get.
