Meet Anomalonychus

Here's my first Spore critter, "Anomalonychus." I'll have more on the Spore Creature Creator (and why it's so damn fun to play with) soon;

Remember my Spore critter, Anomalonychus? Well now it's up on the SporeVote webpage, along with creations from other Reed Cartwright and Craig McClain. Apparently I'm not cool enough to be featured on the front page with Adam West, MC Hammer, and Carlos Santana, but it's still good to have my…
If Opabiniahad left descendants, what would they have looked like? That was the question on my mind as I fiddled around with the new Spore Creature-Creator last Friday night, tweaking my virtual creation this way and that in a bit of speculative biology. I admit that the end result has more to do…
I have very mixed feelings about this game, but I've ordered a copy anyway (Skatje told me I had to). I've played with the creature creator, which is actually rather fun…but it's really just the most elaborate version of Mr Potatohead ever designed. What I've seen of the game itself puts me off a…
"What'cha doin'?" "Huh? Oh, I'm playing with the Spore Creature Creator. It's a videogame thing, that lets me design little computerized critters." "What sort of critters?" "All kinds of things. I could even make one that looks sort of like you. Here, take a look." "Oooh! That's neat. I should have…

Great Critter!

Sadly, I downloaded the Spore demo and it will only run on Leopard Macs not (my) Tigers and needs a serious recent chip set.

Also, I was hoping they would have a PSP version since they have a Nintendo DS one...

In your opinion, although posed as a game, is it a good (truthful) test bed for evolutionary principles?

Is there other (purely scientific) software out there that you recommend?

I downloaded and installed it as well, but it failed to put a shortcut in my program bar, or on my desktop. Go to your C drive, then EA folder, then if you search in the folders, you'll find a spore.exe file that will run the creature creator.

As for the evolution question, I dont see it as an effective tool for teaching evolution, but for the principle of adaptation in a niche, I think it'd be a great game. Nonetheless, getting people involved and excited about evolution, biology, morphology and adaptation is always a good thing.
