So, I may be mostly a lab grunt. But where I work there are all kinds of cool things going on. Like the group that's studying this gorgeous beauty:

This glib article from the Wired Blog Gadgets Lab discusses some of the "crazy" ideas for building computers. Among them, of course, are quantum computers, which means, of course that a quantum computing bastardization, can't be far from behind.
Let's begin at the beginning:
Quantum Computers…
Every day, a handful of physics news items pass through my RSS feeds, and every few days, one of them looks interesting enough that I check the little box to keep it unread, so I can comment on it later (I don't blog from work if I can avoid it). Of course, most of the time, I don't get around to…
In one of his March Meeting posts, Doug Natelson writes about laser cooling experiments that explore condensed matter phenomena:
While the ultracold gases provide an exquisitely clean, tunable environment for studying some physics problems, it's increasingly clear to me that they also have some…
After talking to Cameron Neylon last week, I'm strongly considering setting up an online lab notebook for my research lab. Not so much for the philosophical reasons having to do with openness and the like-- as a practical matter, I still don't think my data will do anybody any good-- but for…
The tiger shark has had to suffer from a lot of libel. It may sometimes confuse humans with seals, but once "sampling" a swimmer they notice their mistake, and abort the attack. I would not like to be bleeding when swimming in the same water, though.
In Brazil, a beach with a lot of shark attacks turned out to be near where efflux from a slaughterhouse emptied into the sea, without any sewage treatment. Not a good idea.
Anyway, bull sharks are much bigger and more dangerous, but keep to warm water. White sharks are rare, but since people seldom survive an attack to tell the tale, deaths from their attacks may be under-reported.
Tiger sharks are often filmed by divers who may be surrounded by a swarm without suffering any harm, so their danger is definitely exaggerated.
I wonder what the feasibility of digging out a large pool in my backyard and filling it with sharks would be...
That would be so creepy Chuck...what if your friend use your 'swimming pool' without telling you hmm..I feel insecure whenever I saw those sharks in aquarium!
It's only valid if you teach them to jump and bite at things hung above them... like pesky spies trying to stop your plans for world domination.
Exactly. Also, I need to find some way to rig up a bunch of trap doors that lead into it. And work on my maniacal laugh.
