Getting into grad school

Since it's just about graduate application time, here are some useful links to help people out during this stressful experience:

Retrospectacle has a post about getting into graduate schools. I think Shelley also has a follow up post to this one - but you'll have to track it down.

Here is another set of advice from Katherine, also good, and also from the University of Michigan.

If you're thinking about going to grad school you should probably read these comics ;)

And good luck if you're applying now!

I'm teaching our senior major seminar this term, which means that once a week, I'm giving hour-long talks on topics of interest to senior physics majors. This week's was "How to Pick and Apply to a Graduate School." I've probably written this basic stuff up about three times already, but I'm too…
We've been running a search to fill a tenure-track faculty position for next year, and I've spent more time than I care to recall reading folders and interviewing candidates. Now that the process is nearing completion, I'd like to do a quick post offering advice for those thinking about applying…
I've found myself in the weird position of giving career advice twice in the last week and a half. Once was to a former student, which I sort of understand, while the second time was a grad student in my former research group, who I've never met. I still don't really feel qualified to offer useful…
"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest." -Benjamin Franklin Recently, a number of people -- of widely different ages and levels of education -- have contacted me for advice on whether or not pursuing a PhD in astrophysics/physics/science-in-general is right for them. Of course, I can't…

So, I forgot that you were changing sites and I didn't update my rss feed. I was thinking, "Steve hasn't posted in a while; must be end-of-term craziness." Then I remembered, and I realized there were lots of posts I had missed. I'm glad that you gave me the proper shout-out, though, in this post! The advice is probably a bit late for most people, as it looks like this post was written the day after a huge number of applications were due. Then again, my advice recommends getting started way early, so it's good for the people who are applying the following year.

I was wondering where you disappeared to?! hahah..

yeah some apps have been missed... I think a whole bunch of apps are due up to the 5th of jan. aren't they?
And the advice is also good for deciding where to actually go once you get in.

I'll have to post this earlier next year ;)
