We had a great time at Wynkoop's tonight, although I noticed that the other attendees at our Pharyngufest were fading out at 10:00 — I had to mention to quite a few people that they had no stamina at all.
Although the fact that they started drinking at 5pm and Wynkoop's has a marvelous assortment of microbrews might have had something to do with it. Truth be told, I was starting to feel a little woozy myself. Anyway, if you weren't there, too bad. Here's a little panarama of the crowd.
It turned out that Wynkoop's was an excellent venue for another reason: check out this amazing mural that was hanging there. I think it's something from Ray Troll.
As long as we're showing off great artwork…nice tattoos!
Darn. It came out too dark. She has a scarlet A on one arm, and a Darwin fish on the other.

Sausagefest!
10h (10am) could, perhaps, be a prudent time to stop drinking if you've been at it since 17h (5pm). At the very least, by then you'd probably need to visit the toilet...
Great meeting you! I'd have loved to hang out longer, but it took about two hours by bus and foot to get home, so...
I meant to tell you, another fellow who showed up confirmed that the art was by Ray Troll, so your instincts were right on. For those who weren't there, the caption on the piece is "An artist's view of THE FAMILY TREE with a ratfish bias." Mammals occupy a small branch in the upper right; cephalopods are prominently displayed toward the top center.
Thanks for an evening filled with good beer, new faces, and heavy-duty discussions of all manner of science -- a young gentleman who'd come down from Wyoming engaged me in talk of cosmology, Hawking radiation, evaporating black holes, and comparative planetary geology...
[pout] Darnitall! I lived in Denver for two years (in the late 90's), and I never enjoyed a gathering of tipsy freethinking science nerds! Everything fun happens when I'm occupied in some other space-time locale! [/pout]
Ah well, I enjoyed more than a few of the Wynkoop's fine brews in amusing company over my years in Denver, so I suppose I shouldn't complain. If Pharyngulites ever gather in Georgia, I'll be there!
I think it's time some of you came down to heathen California. LA, to be exact. Nice looking bunch of grumpy geeks by the way. I'd feel right at home.
It was indeed very completely awesome. Thanks for throwing the Pharyngufest, PZ!
Ray Troll's The Family Tree is available at his web site store

Darwinists have to wear scarlet letters? Is this a new fundie-inspired law?
The Pharyngufests look like so much fun! Let us know if you make it to South Dakota.
I would have loved to come along. Unfortunately, I live on the wrong side of the pond (in Scotland).
If you ever have one here, I'll be there :)
PZ, perhaps you'd consider attending some conference in Melbourne and we could have a beer-o-thon? There's a few philosophy conferences on in Melbourne during July? How about it? You could expound the philosophy of the squid....
Wild infidels on malted barley sauce. Ever coming to Nashville?
Yes, nice mural, and I would like to imagine that is the great Charles Darwin snoozing at the base of the tree!

Next week in Atlanta. GECCO 2008
What do you think would be a good venue for a Pharyngulite Fest? I live way north of the city, & am not familiar with the downtown watering holes.
GECCO 2008 is certainly the right sort of science nerd gathering, but The Tentacled Master Himself is not scheduled to attend, so I can't see canceling on my other plans for the weekend just to arrange a last-minute bit of pharyngering (which is like malingering, but with smarter conversation).
As for Atlanta watering holes, I'm afraid I'm not too familiar with them myself: I live in Athens.
:-)
If I remember correctly, I had a good time.
I also remember now why I don't do that as often as I did once upon a time.
Great to finally meet you, PZ. Enjoy Denver for your brief stay!
I dunno, PZ... I thought you kinda looked like an absent-minded professor when you first got to the top of the stairs, not quite knowing what to do with this rather godless crowd!
And for the record, I was starting to fade out at 9:00, not 10:00! I just ain't as young and sprightly as I used to be. :-(
Anyway, definitely enjoyed the group and the discussions. w00t!
PZ, that's a banner, not a mural! Murals don't hang, they're painted on the wall!! Aughghghghgh!!!
Dammit. I just moved from Denver last month too.
I love the painting. Where do I get one???
Had a great time meeting you last night, PZ. You can see Jeanette's tattoos more clearly here: http://atheists.meetup.com/636/photos/329975/
Glad there were no bar fights ;)
The Friendly Atheist had a nice close up of that tattoo (at least I assume it's the same tattoo).
That's what I get for getting behind on my reading, especially when I could have learned about the meet-up from two separate lists! Though I probably would have been one who was fading fast at 10pm, I'm still on Eastern time. In any case, I really enjoyed your talk today on the evolution of eyes. (Dare I say it was eye-opening?)
Where did you get the Mad Scientist t-shirt?? I know what I'm getting my dad for his birthday!
I was pretty pissed off about missing this. Of all the weeks to have car problems...
Anyway, I hope you had fun PZ and I hope you will come back and visit us soon.
:::sigh::: I truly would have stayed longer, but responsibility beckoned. Next time your in town I will be sure get everything done before hand.
Brian, perhaps you could point PZ at the Lorne conference website? Just a thought.
In my defense, I'm still sickly!
*cough*
:)
I had a great time. PZ Myers has provided us with so much news, education, and entertainment every day and free of charge, that buying his drinks for a night is the least we could do. I hope we get the chance to do it again some time.
It's not a typical social situation when celebrities meet their fans, and can be mutually uncomfortable. I don't think you can necessarily judge someone's "arrogance" based on such an interaction. PZ seemed to loosen up progressively as the night went on, as we all did with some "social lubricant."
Umm, "Clarissa" is the Kansas troll, and "her" comment is about to go away.
And I'll have you know, I will too be at GECCO! I'm giving one of the keynotes, at 8:30 on Tuesday, 15 July, and I'll be in Atlanta for the whole week.
