Next stop: Dublin

I had a nice break for about 14 hours — I arrived in Minneapolis, and my wife showed up with her massage table (there's a reason she is the Trophy Wife™), but now I have to get on a series of planes to arrive after a series of stops in exotic Dublin, where I shall somehow find my way to someplace to stay for a day or so before giving a talk to the University College Dublin humanists. It should be fine, even if I am stumbling about a bit with uncertainty about where I'm going — the Irish are a hospitable people, and if nothing else, I can always find a pub.

Everyone uses that picture Larry Moran shot of me on the bridge across the Thames…I may have to start sending him royalties.

Brave to use a London picture to introduce a Dublin talk.

I think the big, pink molar woulda been a safer choice, but I'm obviously biased.

Right now I really really wish I was still living in Dublin…

So now's an opportunity for the photographers in Ireland to shoot a series of better photos: Professional Poopyhead Little Pee Zed isn't just visiting Dublin, but also elsewhere on the island.

With all due respect, finding a pub will not help you with the "stumbling about a bit" problem. In fact, given just how lovely real Irish Guiness is, it may make the problem a bit worse.

Yeah have fun with those Irish people PZ, we can't wait to see you down here in a few weeks for the really important stuff !!

And still the Creation and Complexity talk ? Maybe something down the lines of the Fry/Hitchens takedown of the RCC would be in order.....

Of course a pub will help me with the stumbling bit! It will help me stop caring that I'm stumbling.

Your passport is showing. How embarrassing.

PZ and the nun

PZ approached Mulligan's bar in Dublin. On the step outside he was accosted by a nun, Sister Marie, who said:

'Surely a fine man like yourself is not going into this den of iniquity? Surely you're not going to waste your hard-earned cash on the devil's brew. Why don't you go home and feed and clothe your wife and children?'

'Hang on, Sister,' replied PZ. 'First, there's no devil, how can you condemn alcohol out of hand? Surely it's wrong to form such a rash judgement when you've never tasted the stuff? And also, my wife and kids are far away in America.'

'Very well,' said Sister Marie. Till taste it just to prove my point. Obviously I can't go into the pub, so why don't you bring me some gin. Oh, and just to camouflage my intent, maybe you should bring it in a cup not a glass!'

'OK,' said PZ and into the bar he breezed.

'I'll have a large gin,' he said to the barman. 'And can you put it in a cup?'

'My God,' said the barman, 'that nun's not outside again is she?'

We have the newly opened 'Samuel Beckett' bridge over the river Liffey, very suitable for photographs. Looking forward to hearing your talk in our 'exotic' city. I hope the students are going to help you to select suitable accommodation, pubs & stumbling ground? I know of a few decent places if you're lost...

I wonder: Does PZ gets lots of notes from people pointing out that he appears in that Larry Moran photo to have reversed the pad on his bag's shoulder strap? The pad goes under the strap, not over. It was designed that way.

(Yeah, yeah, I know. Get a life, Z.)

P.S.: Later today I'll post my narrative of PZ's eighth and final appearance (at Sierra College) as part of his great California tour.

Please come to Cornwall. Luverly place, would be great to welcome you!

I've already reserved my seats for teh UCD show PZ. We'll have to take you for some brews after what I can only hope will be a lecture withs not only breaks the blasphemy law but throws into a blender and inserts into a bishops arse.

I thought you said you were going to be in the UK today, PZ? Are you taking a late-night flight from Ireland to get there?

Tsk, tsk. Don't go telling Dubliners that they're in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, lest you be sped on your way. People tend to be sensitive about that kind of thing.

Woohoo See you in Dublin PZ, Im making the trek to the big smoke to see ya. And you wont have to stumble far to find a pub.

Don't forget to be blasphemous. And carry a banana. Always carry a banana.

Zeno @ # 17 - why does your name-link redirect to a TypePad page with old (3 yrs & more) material, instead of to your blog?

Pierce R. Butler @ #29. Beats me. I have no idea. The link to my blog is there on the TypePad page, but the material on the page is ancient (in Internet years). Perhaps I should try logging in with another ID verification system.

Thanks for pointing that out.

All I want to know is this: PZ met up with Mrs. Myers en route to Dublin. So where is the story of the preacher who helped Mrs. Myers that we were promised?

See you there! Hopefully I'll be able to buy you a pint afterwards!

While I can recommend quite a fewfaces in other parts of the country, in Dublin my wife and I enjoyed going to the Brazen Head Pub, if only for the fact that it's the oldest pub in the country, est. in 1198 AD. If your schedule permits, a more enjoyable time can be hand by going on the Musical Pub Crawl, in which two professional Irish musicians teach you about the history of Irish music, demonstrate a number of instruments and generally show the best of Irish hospitality while guiding you to 5-6 different pubs in the Temple Bar part of town.

I'm considering flying out to see PZ from London. Can you recommend a good place to stay?

B

While you're in Dublin, you must check out the Porter House in the Temple Bar District. Nothing to do with steak, it's a brewpub. Definitely worth making time for.

By drpaisley (not verified) on 30 Jan 2010 #permalink

I second that suggestion. Porterhouse is my home away from home when in Dublin. They brew a most impressing variety of excellent beers. Remember not to try the "Brain Blasta" until right before you retire to your hotel.

Is there any local food PZ should try before he leaves?

Why? Isn't he coming back? Ba - Boom!

Oh right! You mean like in the safety of his own home? Ba - Boom!

By coughlanbrianm (not verified) on 30 Jan 2010 #permalink

I third that suggestion. For some of the time I lived in Dublin, The Porterhouse was, in fact, my local pub. Some of their brews are excellent, others are Ok. And they have a good selection of beers from around the world, occasionally on tap.

Tip: Don't ask for a Guinness there. They don't carry it.

For the truly dedicated Porterhouse fans, I understand the original Porterhouse (which is in Bray, not the one in Temple Bar) is now also a B&B.

There's a third Porterhouse in London, near Covent Garden. (And close to another place, which is now closed and whose name I cannot recall, which I liked whenever I visited London: A French brewpub. Quite good French-style beers and, of course, spectacular food.)

PZed, hi,

I've got myself and 3 colleagues coming to see you on Tuesday. I was able to drum up exactly one creationist at work, but couldn't coax her into coming to see you even though I promised you didn't bite (though I may have taken a bit of license with reality there).

I can also recommend the Porterhouse. And there's a very atmospheric pub called The Bank, located on Dame St. close to the Trinity College entrance. It's a refurbished Georgian era bank, and the loos are actual vaults.

BTW, Pzed, where are you staying in Dublin? I'll send you an e-mail with my contact details, and maybe we could meet up and get to work on that jet lag of yours...

Re: Food native fare that PZ should eat.

Soda Bread.

It's the only food that we know how to make properly.

Speaking of the porterhouse... You've got to try a banana beer!

By sbtech001 (not verified) on 31 Jan 2010 #permalink

You should make your way up to Belfast if you get the chance PZ, we sure could be doing with a little more godlessness up here.

I know the one you mean. It had a Scottish name, McDowell's or MacDougal's or something like that. Had the most delicious hot minced beef and cheese sandwiches, called a Big Mike or Big Mick or something like that.

That doesn't sound right (unless they changed (considerably?) after my last visit before finally closing), albeit I could be mistaken. The brewpub I'm thinking was very much French—most of the staff seemed to be French, they brewed a blonde, a brune, and at least one other beer, I don't recall the food including anything like a minced beef and cheese (albeit since that's not my thing I may not have noticed), I think the name I cannot recall was French-ish, and I first learned of them via a local (London) CAMRA newsletter (found in the Porterhouse as I now recall). As I now recall, both outside and in it looked more like a modern café (glass and sniny) then a typical pub. This would have been c.2002, and they no longer existed c.2007. I do not recall what is now there.

@blf #45

You've got me pondering that one now. I used to watch the Tour de France daily in there in 02 and 03. It was on Endell St, opposite Betterton st. Great beers and a great restaurant too.

Fecked if I can remember its name though, sorry.

66steve@46,

Yes, Endell Street sounds right for the location, and looking at the map, it's more-or-less where I (vaguely) recall the place being. Unfortunately, my London notes aren't at hand, so I can't look it up, but in a few weeks time (if I remember) I'll be adjacent to those notes…
