So now's an opportunity for the photographers in Ireland to shoot a series of better photos: Professional Poopyhead Little Pee Zed isn't just visiting Dublin, but also elsewhere on the island.

With all due respect, finding a pub will not help you with the "stumbling about a bit" problem. In fact, given just how lovely real Irish Guiness is, it may make the problem a bit worse.

PZ and the nun

PZ approached Mulligan's bar in Dublin. On the step outside he was accosted by a nun, Sister Marie, who said:

'Surely a fine man like yourself is not going into this den of iniquity? Surely you're not going to waste your hard-earned cash on the devil's brew. Why don't you go home and feed and clothe your wife and children?'

'Hang on, Sister,' replied PZ. 'First, there's no devil, how can you condemn alcohol out of hand? Surely it's wrong to form such a rash judgement when you've never tasted the stuff? And also, my wife and kids are far away in America.'

'Very well,' said Sister Marie. Till taste it just to prove my point. Obviously I can't go into the pub, so why don't you bring me some gin. Oh, and just to camouflage my intent, maybe you should bring it in a cup not a glass!'

'OK,' said PZ and into the bar he breezed.

'I'll have a large gin,' he said to the barman. 'And can you put it in a cup?'

'My God,' said the barman, 'that nun's not outside again is she?'

Is there any local food PZ should try before he leaves?

We have the newly opened 'Samuel Beckett' bridge over the river Liffey, very suitable for photographs. Looking forward to hearing your talk in our 'exotic' city. I hope the students are going to help you to select suitable accommodation, pubs & stumbling ground? I know of a few decent places if you're lost...

I wonder: Does PZ gets lots of notes from people pointing out that he appears in that Larry Moran photo to have reversed the pad on his bag's shoulder strap? The pad goes under the strap, not over. It was designed that way.

While I can recommend quite a fewfaces in other parts of the country, in Dublin my wife and I enjoyed going to the Brazen Head Pub, if only for the fact that it's the oldest pub in the country, est. in 1198 AD. If your schedule permits, a more enjoyable time can be hand by going on the Musical Pub Crawl, in which two professional Irish musicians teach you about the history of Irish music, demonstrate a number of instruments and generally show the best of Irish hospitality while guiding you to 5-6 different pubs in the Temple Bar part of town.

I'm considering flying out to see PZ from London. Can you recommend a good place to stay?

While you're in Dublin, you must check out the Porter House in the Temple Bar District. Nothing to do with steak, it's a brewpub. Definitely worth making time for.

I second that suggestion. Porterhouse is my home away from home when in Dublin. They brew a most impressing variety of excellent beers. Remember not to try the "Brain Blasta" until right before you retire to your hotel.

I third that suggestion. For some of the time I lived in Dublin, The Porterhouse was, in fact, my local pub. Some of their brews are excellent, others are Ok. And they have a good selection of beers from around the world, occasionally on tap.

Tip: Don't ask for a Guinness there. They don't carry it.

For the truly dedicated Porterhouse fans, I understand the original Porterhouse (which is in Bray, not the one in Temple Bar) is now also a B&B.

There's a third Porterhouse in London, near Covent Garden. (And close to another place, which is now closed and whose name I cannot recall, which I liked whenever I visited London: A French brewpub. Quite good French-style beers and, of course, spectacular food.)

I've got myself and 3 colleagues coming to see you on Tuesday. I was able to drum up exactly one creationist at work, but couldn't coax her into coming to see you even though I promised you didn't bite (though I may have taken a bit of license with reality there).

I can also recommend the Porterhouse. And there's a very atmospheric pub called The Bank, located on Dame St. close to the Trinity College entrance. It's a refurbished Georgian era bank, and the loos are actual vaults.

BTW, Pzed, where are you staying in Dublin? I'll send you an e-mail with my contact details, and maybe we could meet up and get to work on that jet lag of yours...

That doesn't sound right (unless they changed (considerably?) after my last visit before finally closing), albeit I could be mistaken. The brewpub I'm thinking was very much French—most of the staff seemed to be French, they brewed a blonde, a brune, and at least one other beer, I don't recall the food including anything like a minced beef and cheese (albeit since that's not my thing I may not have noticed), I think the name I cannot recall was French-ish, and I first learned of them via a local (London) CAMRA newsletter (found in the Porterhouse as I now recall). As I now recall, both outside and in it looked more like a modern café (glass and sniny) then a typical pub. This would have been c.2002, and they no longer existed c.2007. I do not recall what is now there.

You've got me pondering that one now. I used to watch the Tour de France daily in there in 02 and 03. It was on Endell St, opposite Betterton st. Great beers and a great restaurant too.

Yes, Endell Street sounds right for the location, and looking at the map, it's more-or-less where I (vaguely) recall the place being. Unfortunately, my London notes aren't at hand, so I can't look it up, but in a few weeks time (if I remember) I'll be adjacent to those notes…
