New Music Random Ten

I keep meaning to write a substantial follow-up post talking about science funding, but it's not a great Friday topic, so it'll probably wait for Monday, even though I'll be away for the latter part of next week. I'm moving a little too slowly this morning to really do it justice, so here are some random tracks from my iPod. In this case, the source playlist is limited to songs I bought in the last 60 days:

  • "Bonus Tack," The New Amsterdams
  • "A Widow's Toast," Neko Case
  • "Catch You Disappointed," The Divorce
  • "Better Days," The Goo Goo Dolls
  • "Turn Out the Light (Reprise)," The New Amsterdams
  • "We Shall Overcome," Bruce Springsteen
  • "Oh Lately It's So Quiet," Ok Go
  • "It's Getting Light Outside," Clearlake
  • "So Fast," Goldspot
  • "Goin' On," The Flaming Lips

Recent purchases not represented here: Powder Burns by the Twilight Singers, The Believer by Rhett Miller, and new albums from Shawn Mullins and David Gray, shredding whatever indie cred I might otherwise have claimed (I think the Goo Goo Dolls song probably already did that...).

Recommendations for stuff that I really ought to be listening to instead are welcome in the comments. Particularly if they're available through iTunes.

The iPod giveth, and the iPod taketh away. Back in the day, there was this technology called "audio tape," which people used to record music. On a typical tape, you could record maybe ten or elevent pop songs, and then you had to flip it over, and record another ten or eleven songs on the other…
This went around a different corner of my social-media universe while I was off in Waterloo, away from my iTunes. I was curious about it, though, so looked at the contents of the "25 Most Played" playlist, and having done that, I might as well post them here (the number in parentheses is the number…
"American Music," the Violent Femmes "California Stars," Billy Bragg and Wilco "The City of New Orleans," Arlo Guthrie "Song to Woody," Bob Dylan "The Body of an American," the Pogues "Born in the USA," Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band "Fortunate Son," Creedence Clearwater Revival "American…
It's that time of year, when people who write about music attempt to sum the year up in list form. And who am I to buck that trend? The advent of iTunes makes it much easier than it used to be for me to compile a "best of 2006" list, as it keeps records of when I added various songs to the…

If you enjoyed Franz Ferdinand, you should try the new Arctic Monkeys.

I'll also pimp Youngblood Brass Band, since they just did a show here in Indianapolis.

Not new, and probably not under your musical radar (one of the songs was featured on the Clueless soundtrack, but I've been really enjoying Born to Quit by the Smoking Popes.

You should be listening to Gnarls Barkley. Right now. I'm serious.

The single ("Crazy") is the best song on the album, but it's overall quite solid.

The Arctic Monkeys were also part of one of my recent iTunes purchases, and I do like the record quite a bit. For whatever reason, the randomizer didn't throw up any of their songs in that block, so I forgot to mention them.

I've heard the Gnarls Barkley single on KEXP, and it is, indeed, a good track. They're on the list of bands to listen to the next time I make an iTunes purchase.
