Small Victories

Here's my achievement for the week:

OK, that may not seem like much, but this is what it looked like before I started:

OK, that's not really my only accomplishment for the week-- I have three students for the first half of the summer (two of them for the whole summer), and all three got off to good starts on their summer projects this week. That's why it's taken me a whole week to clean my office-- I've been run ragged getting them all going, and keeping on top of their progress.

Still, the important papers have been filed, the unimportant ones recycled, and the trash taken away. Time to start messing things up again.

Just a note: Eric stepped on the overpriced device that allows us to have a slow and primitive but still wireless connection out here in middle-of-nowhere-land this morning. It is still working, miraculously (it doesn't look like it should be working), but I expect to lose internet access…
(This post is part of the new round of interviews of non-academic scientists, giving the responses of Amy Young, who runs her own soap-making business. The goal is to provide some additional information for science students thinking about their fiuture careers, describing options beyond the assumed…
The last time I talked about our job search, I got a lot of comments of the form "Why does the process take so damn long?" As the first of our short list candidates shows up today for a campus visit/ interview, I thought I'd go through a sketch of what we do, and why it takes so long. I'm going to…
Between unpleasant work stuff and the Dread Stomach Bug wiping out the better part of five days, I only got my student evaluation comments for my winter term class last week, and I'm only getting around to writing the post-mortem now. This was, for those who may not have been obsessively following…

There has got to be a better use for that space under your monitor than storing books that you don't reference.

There has got to be a better use for that space under your monitor than storing books that you don't reference.

Actually, that's a medical issue-- the books are there to prop the monitor up to a height where I don't have to tip my head down to look at it. It makes it somewhat less likely that I'll suffer crippling muscle spasms in my neck again.

Those are desk copies of twenty-year-old introductory physics textbooks that I swiped out of the student lounge.

On behalf of student lounge dwellers everywhere, I demand the return of our monitor stands.

I would love to have watched the process of going through all your old physics texts to make two stacks of EXACTLY the same height.

get the machinist (or do it yourself) make a stand the right height out of plexiglass sheets and rods, thats what we did for my wife after her spinal surgery. Wise to do it BEFORE that happens!

I help my father's friend, a physics professor, move his office.

Your messy desk would have been a tidy desk for him.

What are you, 7 feet tall?

We are supposed to be impressed with your clutter? I had more than that in my smallest pile at the end of spring. The computer is on a small work stand behind on the left, but lacks large level surfaces to attract clutter. [Reminder to self: need to post the "after" picture, which looks like Chad's "before", and finish the job before August.]

Clever use of old textbooks. I built a shelf to do the same thing. (Note to "grad": You should sit with your shoulders back and head up when looking at the computer screen. See comment above about neck problems and surgery. My yoga teacher calls this the result of "computer pose".) But Chad, your keyboard seems high to me.

PS - Your running shoes are still under the desk.
