International Blog Against Racism Week 2

This week has been declared International Blog Against Racism Week, so if you're looking for something serious and worthwhile to do with your blog, you might want to check out the many interesting things being posted, and even contribute something. Unless you post comments under the handle "Uncle Al," in which case, I'd really rather not hear your thoughts on the subject, if that's all right.

I really don't have anything to say about this at this time, but there are lots of people who don't have that problem. For example, Kate. Or Tobias Buckell, a bit early, not to mention Scalzi and his commenters.

There's lots of good stuff out there, so go read it, comment on it, write your own posts, whatever.

This is the second post in which I'm pulling a revise-and-extend job on some things I said at Science Online at a few panels on bloggy stuff: in the how-to-do-outreach session (posted yesterday, the blogging long term session, and the what-to-do-when-people-start-taking-you-seriously session. In…
This was the title of the group discussion I led at Boskone on Saturday, and since it's probably relevant to the interests of people reading this blog, I figure it's worth posting a quick recap. Of course, between the unfamiliar format and Friday's travel with the Incredible Screaming Pip, I didn't…
A few of my recent posts here appear to have struck some nerves, and I've been getting lots of annoying email containing the same questions, over and over again. So rather than reply individually, I'm going to answer them here in the hope that either (a) people will see the answers before send the…
A couple of days ago, John Scalzi posted a writing advice open thread, asking people to share the best advice they'd gotten on the craft of writing. There's a lot of good stuff in there, much of it fairly specific to fiction writing-- stuff about plotting, the use of synonyms for "said," how to…

Kate,

Thanks for your thoughtfull knee-jerk response. (I will not call you any names in return, as you did). The article is well worth reading, city journal is publishing top stuff and this one is a good example, and right to the subject of the post.

I made the first comment because I am nauseous of terms like "reverse racism" - as if racism is only perpetrated by whites on blacks by definition and therefore a new term has to be coined to describe the exception from the rule. Or the concept that the only perpetrators in domestic violence or rape or sexual harassment are men.

I don't know where you stand on political corectness but I can make a guess. So please go ahead and try to lecture me about what opinions are tolerable in a genteel discussion.

I'm just back from vacation, and still generally in a good mood.

Please don't make me have to start deleting and disemvowelling comments.
