You Are Horrible, Nasty People

So, let's review the week in DonorsChoose fundraising:

You all suck.

No, that's not true-- your generosity has been very impressive. The Uncertain Principles challenge currently stands at $3,118 raised, from 39 donors, second among ScienceBlogs, after Pharyngula, which gets more than 20 times as many pageviews as this blog. I'm flattered to have such generous readers.

But, honestly, "I'll stab myself with a fork" is what spurs contributions? If I promise to post pictures, will that get me another $200? Because I will...

For those keeping score at home, the "stab myself with a fork" threshold is $3,552, and "read and review atheist screed" is $3,802. "Allow Richard Dawkins to stab me with a fork" threshold is $4,802 plus whatever it takes to get him here to do it, and "a year without atheist baiting" is $6,000. The deadline for all of those incentives is the end of the day Friday, so act quickly if any of those things appeal to you.

There is also a standing offer to write blog posts for $30 donations, and a chance to win Seed/ ScienceBlogs swag. So there are plenty of reasons to donate, even beyond the obvious "helping needy school children" thing.

Well, the DonorsChoose challenge came up short of the "stab myself with a fork" threshold by the Friday deadline, though the whole business turned out to be surprisingly effective. Go figure. At this point in things, militant atheist baiting is pretty much played out as a fundraising strategy,…
At the time of this writing (about 8:20 on Monday), my DonorsChoose challenge entry stands at $2,802, nearly double last year's take. That's outstanding, and I thank everyone who contributed. Of course, I set a Challenge goal of $6,000, which means we're not quite halfway there. Which means I need…
For those keeping score, the DonorsChoose Challenge stands at $3,262 right now. Only hours remain before this week's incentive deadline, so act quickly: For another $290, I'll stab myself with a fork. For another $540, I'll read and respectfully review Richard Dawkins's book, or some other atheist…
Edited to add: we've reached our goal! Thank you so much to all who participated; if others would still like to donate, Janet has a list of other blogger challenges--and remember that every completed challenge gets a 10% completion bonus from DonorsChoose, stretching your donation farther.…

Given the consequences of giving now I think I'll wait till after the deadline.

Well, to put the least objectionable face on the whole thing, maybe it isn't so much "Hey, we can get him to stab himself with a fork!" so much as "Wow, he thinks this is important enough that he will do himself physical harm to see that it gets done! If it is this important then I should contribute!"

That said, at this point people need to cough up at least $290 more in order to produce any fork-stabbing pictures. In case you are interested, I mean.
