Doggy Poll: Prey

Chipmunks. Because they chirp at you, even when they're not visible. (And we've had an infestation these last couple of years.)

Squirrels. For the challenge.

As for cats:

Prey is Business. Enemies are Pleasure.

My greyhounds agree: bunnies all the way. They're so white and fluffy, they're just asking to be chased.

Bunnies -- at least an equal challenge, since they can run faster and further, with added diversionary leaps, while still remaining earthbound.

Of course, you could make it harder for Emmy to choose -- bunnies made of cheese vs. squirrels made of steak.

I agree that cats are a separate category -- rivals or enemies, but not really prey.

Bunnies! Because they're nasty evil creatures who deserve to be eaten.

Squirrels.

Mallard ducks.

They come to swim in our pool and my Lab jumps in to try to get them.

Bunnies. The whole tree thing absolutely ruins a good chase.

My Lab says "Squirrels!"

Especially when you've had the taste of squirrel tail-hairs on your lips....

Wild rabbits, in a large, recently plowed field. Emmy will get the aerobic workout of her life, and the rabbits will have a good time laughing about it afterward.

My German Shepherds immediately barked: "Squirrels!!!"

But, feeling that was only because they had never actually seen bunnies before, I described rabbits at length. As predicted, they both switched their answer.

Squirrels are why you get bird feeders if you have cats. Live entertainment, all the day long.

Bunnies are for land animals to chase. They don't cheat by getting vertical.

Bunnies, obviously. Squirrels cheat.

You should bring her to Union--I've seen lots of baby bunnies around lately.

For the inexperienced dog, bunnies are the way to go. For the experienced dog, especially a country-raised dog, squirrels are actually kind of fun because they think they are so smart. They will sometimes climb a few feet off the ground and then turn around and chide the chasing dog. Our old country dog sometimes leapt into the air and plucked them off the tree as he passed.

Bunnies because my dog gets yelled at for chasing squirrels.

I've had the same family of squirrels -- or so I like to think -- living in the same hole in the same tree for 20 odd years, but bunnies are just stuffed animals that run away.

Ground Hogs, because we have toys that are groundhogs and they are sow unlike those chipmunks and the two schizo squirrels that play ring and run in the back yard.

Squirrels, because they talk back (at my dog anyway).

I vote bunnies. Watch out for that rocky mountain fever, Emmy!

Lol chad, I can't believe you get this kind of response from the weirdest questions. Me, I just get Lubos writing wrong physics in the comments thread of a post asking a quite serious question on the muon lifetime measurement bias :(

Squirrels.

First, you can lure them in with a bird feeder.

Second, once you get them up a tree, you can bark up at them to come down and fight like a dog.

Third, if you are persistent and loud enough with your "invitation" to the squirrel, your human pet might even climb the tree (great entertainment in and of itself!) and shake the squirrel down.

Finally, I actually caught one once.

Samson the terrier, who has never seen a bunny and is constantly thwarted by the squirrel-tree thing, votes for birds, the deader the better. Mmm, feathers.

Squirrels. Bunnies don't climb our avocado tree and steal our avocados.

Wabbits.

Rabbits are also lurable by bird feeders, because even squirrel-proof feeders spill a lot of seed on the ground.

Emmy *almost* caught a bird once, shortly after she came to live with; a mourning dove was sitting on the driveway and didn't hear her coming. It left behind a few feathers as a token of its inattention.

Squirrels are rats with good hairstylists and kick-ass publicists. They must be eliminated. Death to vermin!
