This is a much more idiosyncratic sampling than usual, for the simple reason that I bought very little music this year-- probably the least since I started buying my own records. This was a combination of pre-SteelyKid austerity measures (do you know what day care costs these days?), post-SteelyKid…
Twelve of the Top 25 Most Played songs were correctly identified over the weekend. Given the obscurity of some of these, that's pretty impressive. I think there's only one that should've been obvious that didn't get guessed. Full answers are below the fold. (Edited to add: If you enjoy this sort of…
Top choices from the recent acquisitions playlist: "Sly," Cat Empire. I bought this because of the 75 or Less review, which asks the important questions: When did G Love become the bandleader for the Blues Brothers? And when did they add reggae and Latin influences? And why are my feet doing this…
It's that time of year again, when everybody who has the slightest interest in pop culture starts making "Year's Best" lists. I'm usually at a major disadvantage when it comes to this sort of thing, as I can never really remember when any particular album was released, and I buy a lot of stuff that…

One of the songs in the batch that I bought from the iTunes Music Store last month has been particularly relevant lately due to the real estate/credit crisis: "Little Boxes" by Pete Seeger. I think Wilco is the only one of those bands I've ever heard a song by, and Black Kids are the only other band I've heard *of* from your list, and that just within the past week or so.

I highly recommend the Phantom Planet song, but the version available on last.fm isn't the same as the one that I've been listening to. How damnably annoying. The version I like is here on YouTube, but several other versions have been deleted, so look quickly.

I love "Lost in the Light". I actually heard it on WXRT in chicago, so it is on the radio, but yeah it was hell finding the record. found it on amazon and the artowrk is stunning. good band. Love Wilco. A ghost is born blew, but anything after YHF would've been hard to love. They bounced right back.
