Another Year, Another Quasi-Hiatus

Classes for the 2011-2012 academic year start tomorrow, which means that blogging will come to a nearly complete stop. I have an exceptionally heavy teaching load this term (deliberately, because I'm developing a new course in the winter term, and FutureSibling! is due in November), and it's become clear that there are not enough hours in the day to fulfill all my professional and family obligations and still generate worthwhile content for the blog.

It's not a total shutdown-- I'll still be reading things, so there may continue to be Links Dumps, and I've got some book reviews in the queue-- but there's no way I can maintain my usual pace, and I'm not even going to try. Accordingly, the ResearchBlogging post scheduled for later today is the last guaranteed post for at least September (well, OK, the second-to-last, as there will be the annual moment of silence this Sunday), possibly the entire term.

The title pretty much says it all. One of the reasons I wanted to get the Ten Years Before the Blog series done was that I'm incredibly burned out on everything right now, and I need to step away from the Internet for a while. There are too many things that aren't getting done, and I just can't…
Just a note: Eric stepped on the overpriced device that allows us to have a slow and primitive but still wireless connection out here in middle-of-nowhere-land this morning. It is still working, miraculously (it doesn't look like it should be working), but I expect to lose internet access…
Classes for the Winter term start today, and I'm totally prepared for this. Yep. Uh-huh. Losing a bunch of prep time to snow and ice last week hasn't thrown anything into disarray. Anyway, for a variety of reasons, I've ended up departing from my plan to not do any new preps while I'm stuck being…
I'm giving the final exam in my E&M class tonight (from 5-7 pm, thank you oh-so-much, Central Scheduling), which you might think would bode well for blogging in the future. However, I also have two summer students starting on Monday, a baby on the way, and major book revisions to do that need…

FutureSibling!

I'm already thinking, "SteelySib" or maybe "TitaniumKid," or some-such. This is exciting news.

Yes, I made my surmises from last week's pictures, but I always wait for the announcement before saying anything. Congratulations to the growing family!

Thanks! (There was an official announcement but it was some time ago.)

And it's from Chateau Steelypips, which is a reference to Stainslaw Lem's _The Cyberiad_, not the alloy. =>
