Nim
As an introduction to a mathematical game, and how you can use a little bit of math to form a description of the game that allows you to determine the optimal strategy, I'm going to talk a bit about Nim. Nim is a simple two-player turn-taking game. The idea is you've got a collection of piles of rocks. The standard terminology calls each pile a heap. Each turn, a player can take any number of rocks from any single heap. In classic Nim, whoever takes the last rock loses. But we're going to start with an easier to analyze variant, where whoever takes the last rock wins. Let's look at an…

Friday random ten (on Saturday)
The Friday Random Ten is a bit of a blog tradition that many bloggers periodically indulge in, including fellow ScienceBloggers PZ, Chad, and John. However, Orac, ever the contrarian, likes to indulge in this practice on Saturdays (when he does it at all). So, without further ado, take a plunge into a very small sampling (0.08776%) of Orac's music collection that happened to come up randomly on a shuffle play set for my entire iTunes library: The Harbinger Complex, I Think I'm Down (from: Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era). Suede (I refuse to call them "The London…

Happy Birthday PZ Myers
Yes, today, PZ is 50 years old! Archy, Grrrlscientist and myself are compiling linkfests today. Just make sure that you have the word "Myers" in your post (having just "PZ" messes up with some search engines - too short). This year, Dan Rhoades is the first out of the box with a cool tentacled cartoon. Richard Dawkins wrote a poem. Grrrlscientist did a scientific study. PZ himself acknowldeges his age. Last year, I made this cephalopod collage (click to enlarge). Greg Laden wrote a limerick. John Wilkins wrote lyrics for a Broadway musical. Sean Carrol gave PZ a... well, you'll have to see…

ScienceOnline09 - blogging from strange, crazy places!
Introducing another session: Blogging adventure: how to post from strange locations: This is a panel discussion with Karen James, Talia Page, Anne-Marie Hodge, Vanessa Woods, Meredith Barrett, John McKay, Kevin Zelnio, Rick McPhearson and Craig McClain: The stereotype is that bloggers write in their parents' basements, wearing pajamas, covered with Cheetos dust. But some bloggers have done amazing feats of reporting from weird and far-away places. Do you intend to do something like that? What are the technological challenges - and solutions - and what are the pros and cons of blogging from…

Calculate your CO2 emissions by plane, train, or automobile. Here's a puzzler for the greenhouse gas enthusiasts among you: According to this calculator, car and airplane emissions even out over progressively longer trips, despite the obvious weaknesses of an as-the-crow-flies methodology (see above; we're driving through Lake Erie). Is this trend real? Is there actually a distance at which it's less polluting to fly than drive? Here are some sample results... New York to Detroit: 0.236 tons CO2 from driving 0.275 tons CO2 from flying 0.206 tons CO2 from travel by rail/bus New York to St.…
