Prove Me Wrong: Earth Day Was a Non-Event

Is it just me or was Earth Day nothing special? Judging from this article, Earth Day Goes Political and Corporate, I'm right (unless you think planting an elm tree is going green). Maybe it's precisely beacuse Earth Day went political and corporate it no longer means anything...or maybe every day is Earth Day.

You know how I was sick last week? I was all responsible and stuff, drinking lots of green tea and getting to sleep early and all, and over the weekend I actually felt reasonably healthy for like a day and a half. And now? I seem to have caught another nasty cold. Which is to explain that this…
In front, a boulder upon which I found cupmarks. Behind, a Bronze Age burnt mound consisting of fire-cracked stones. In order to study the landscape situation of something you need to know precisely where it is. This poses a problem when it comes to Bronze Age sacrificial finds, because they are…
Doug Stanhope once did a very funny bit about how people taking a political cause too far can make you go in the other direction just to spite them. He'd say, "It's like the PETA people. I'm sympathetic to their cause, I mean, I would never hurt an animal, that's just messed up. But PETA is so…

The biggest thing it left me wondering about is "Where's the beef?" for Al Gore. The 60 Minutes segment on him a couple weeks ago made it sound like he was going to rock the nation on Earth Day with his $300 million campaign. And then I ran around and told everybody, "You better watch out, my hero Al Gore is gonna kick your ass on Earth Day." And then ... whut? Where are ya, Al? Actually, I just looked at your www.wecansolveit.org website. Um ... is that all you got for your money? yikes.

I was a little taken aback when an elderly couple commented to me that I was riding my bike to work for Earth Day. I ride my bike 6 miles to the university EVERYDAY, even in snow and rain. So to me, earth day is everyday, while Earth Day has no meaning. And certainly at Penn State no one gave a shit.
