Weekend Diversion: Happy 70th, John Lennon

"If being an egomaniac means I believe in what I do and in my art or music, then in that respect you can call me that... I believe in what I do, and I'll say it."

-John Lennon

John Lennon, assassinated thirty years ago, would have been 70 today. Sometimes, a simple song can say it better than any prose can.

Julia
This was written for his mother, Julia, who died in an accident when John was a teenager. Happy birthday -- to John Lennon and to everyone who remembers his music -- from me and the rest of scienceblogs!

In my recent WSJ article on age and creativity, I didn't have space to discuss the fascinating research of David Galenson, an economist at the University of Chicago who brings together a vast array of evidence to better understand the nature of creative production over time. Galenson divides…
I rarely do these blog memes, but I saw this one at Noonan's place and thought it would be amusing. You take the top 100 songs from the year you graduated high school (1985 for me) and pick out the ones that wouldn't make you instantly change the radio station if they came on. Here's the list: 1.…
Good grief, but this is tedious. I'm still getting piles of email every day from people 1) begging me not to abuse a cracker because it is so sacred to them, piles of email telling me to 2) abuse a book because it is so sacred to Muslims (I've even been sent two copies of the Koran!), and of course…
Graduation was this morning, and it just so happens that I was the speaker. That I am posting the speech below should tell you that I thought it went pretty well. I'll do a separate post describing some of the reactions, and commenting on a few of the other graduation-speech related stories that…

Happy 70th!

Still can't believe it was 30 years ago; seems like it was yesterday :/

"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." - John Lennon

The morning after he died was the last time I listened to morning news. I actually used news as my radio alarm! I'm still missing the songs he would have written.

I miss you, John. You were really cool!

He was not just a man; he was a legend - way too talent for many people of his own time to appreciate completely. Never ever harmed a soul - believed in what is needed right now in this world of ours - love, love, love .... Will always be remembered and respected as one of the Wonders of the Music World.

I will always be grateful for having lived the Lennon/Beatles era, holding them dearly in my heart and soul! It will be an honor to be with them in the afterlife! Lennon's views of peace will forever impact me. Regretful but true, our overall self-centered society should follow his example to make this a peaceful and equitable world for everyone to enjoy! John, I will always miss you and God Bless You!
