A quick follow-up to my mention of Edward Tufte last week: you should be aware that Edward Tufte's brief classic, Data Analysis for Politics and Policy, is available online as a PDF here. It's worth a skim in your spare time - and worth sharing with people who don't necessarily appreciate the limitations of statistics.

ScienceBlogling Abel Pharmboy asks two questions about collegiality and tenure: 1. Do you think that lack of collegiality is grounds for denial of tenure for a candidate that otherwise meets the basic quantitative criteria outlined in university guidelines? 2. Do you feel that collegiality - or whatever you want to call it: teamwork, cooperation - should be an important factor in making academic tenure decisions? To get question 1 out of the way, I'm assuming that the guidelines don't specifically mention collegiality (which is really stupid). In that case, to deny someone tenure based on…

Boskone this past weekend was held at the Westin Waterfront in Boston, which has these funky double showerheads that they charmingly call the "Heavenly(R) Shower" (hype aside, they are very nice showers). The picture at right is courtesy of lannalee on Twitter, as I didn't bring a camera. Why am I telling you this? Because there was a sign glued to the wall in the shower that read: Refresh yourself, restore our world One of your Heavenly(R) Shower heads has been turned off in an effort to minimize water usage and protect one of our most precious natural resources. Today, I rejected a submission to Scientia Pro Publica because it was too old (published in September 2009) and because it is not a blog essay. That said, this is an excellent piece of journalistic writing by University of Arizona mathematics PhD Candidate David Morales, published in the Tucson Science Examiner. Morales' piece investigates an issue that I think deserves more attention: water conservation. Even though Morales is writing about water use (and waste) in the deserts of Arizona, this is an important issue that will affect us all soon, if it doesn't already: as a native of "rainy"…

... when it comes to Creationist Home Schooling. Two dozen or so atheists, skeptics, scientists, and secularists visited the 2010 Home School Science Fair at Har Mar Mall, Roseville Minnesota. We witnessed (if I may borrow that term) twenty six home school project posters. The presentations varied considerably in their sophistication, overall quality, and complexity of the work represented, and most of this variation is easily understood as the outcome of the wide age range of the children who produced them. Some were impressive, some were cute, some were more scientific, some were less,…
