Senckenberg Naturmuseum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 13 April 2010 [larger view] This is a gorgeous fossil shell photographed at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum .. how old is this? What species is this? I don't know .. but I will return and collect more detailed information to share with you (this first visit was a quick pass through the museum to see what they have on display).

Image: GrrlScientist, 14 April 2010 [larger view]. Yesterday, I stood underneath a skyscraper! No, I was not inside the skyscraper, I was underneath it! I took this picture because I was sure you would never believe me.

Image: GrrlScientist, 13 April 2010 [larger view] If you were here today, I would show you around the Senckenberg Natural History Museum. During your visit, this is one of the many natural wonders you would see.

Image: GrrlScientist, 7 April 2010 [larger view] This is one of several photographs I snapped of these tulips. The colors were so intense that it made me think of a very neatly arranged stack of Easter eggs.

Image: GrrlScientist, 7 April 2010 [larger view] This is another flower I photographed yesterday in the morning sunshine. The photograph turned out better than I expected, despite the shadows and peculiar sunlight that seemed to transform colors before my very eyes.
tags: Violett HahnenfuÃ, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, travel, nature, flowers, image of the day Violett HahnenfuÃ. Nordwestzentrum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 7 April 2010 [larger view] As soon as I saw this image through the viewfinder on my camera, I knew it was magic. The camera did not capture the purple color correctly (it was much richer and brighter than you see here -- a rather washed out version of real life) but it did capture the amazing patterns that made this image so beautiful in my eye.

Image: GrrlScientist, 6 April 2010 [larger view] So why am I in Bockenheim again? I went here because I had an appointment to get a bank account. After complaining mightily about this enormous waste of time (I've never had to make an appointment to set up a bank account before), I was surprised and most pleased to meet a personable banker who visits NYC frequently (he has family there and is returning on 15 May for a…

Image: GrrlScientist, 6 April 2010 [larger view] This is an astonishingly gorgeous day in Frankfurt am Main; warm (but not too warm) and everything is exploding into bloom under an impossibly blue sky. I wish you were here with me because I would bring you to my favorite coffee shop in Bockenheimer Warte; Cafe Extrablatt, where they not only give me FREE wifi, but they also cheerfully provide powerpoints (that's a "plug in" or an "…

tags: Orchidee, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, travel, nature, flowers, image of the day Orchidee. Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 6 March 2010 [larger view] I have a whole slew of orchid photographs that I might set free upon the world someday. This image captures a rather common flower, but I still like it because, even though it's not perfect, it almost seems like abstract art.

Bockenheim Tower in Bockenheimer Warte, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 31 March 2010 [larger view] The weather today was glorious, although a strong wind made for a very cold day. Even though I was wearing my spouse's suit jacket over my t-shirt, I was still very cold. I went to Bockenheim in west Frankfurt a.M. to open a bank account (have to make an appointment days in advance, sheesh) and afterwards, I went to a…

Image: Bob O'Hara, 30 March 2010 [larger view] This was the sunset as photographed from the windows of the flat where I live in Frankfurt am Main. Don't you wish you could be here too, drinking a nice syrah and eating some of the Karotten-ingwer Suppe that I am preparing at this very moment?
tags: Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Mikroskop, travel, cities, sculpture, image of the day Mikroskop. Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 24 March 2010 [larger view] This is a sculpture that is located outside the front door to the building where I have been spending most of my days, writing. A close look at where this microscope is pointed shows that it is focused on Edinburgh, the home of my Sb colleague and friend, geologist Chris Rowan. It also happens to be the seat of Scottish Parliament.

Max-Planck Institut für Biophysik, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 25 March 2010 [larger view] Here's one photograph of the red-and-yellow tulips I saw at the Max-Planck Institute a few days ago. Unfortunately, the weather has not cooperated since, so even though I've photographed these flowers daily since then, none of those images captured what I wish to show to you. But this photograph isn't too…
tags: Nordwestzentrum, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, Gelbe Wolken, flowers, nature, environment, image of the day Gelbe Wolken. Nordwestzentrum Open Air Market, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 3 March 2010 [larger view] When I saw these brilliant lemon yellow flowers, I was immediately captivated. I took half a dozen photographs, trying to capture the fluffiness and the brilliant yellow color of the flowers and contrast that against the dark background as well as the sharp edges of the green leaves. I don't think I succeeded at this, but this is still a nice image to look…

Image: GrrlScientist, 3 March 2010 [larger view] This was one of hundreds of cut flowers that I photographed at the Nordwestzentrum Open Air Market one particularly sunny morning. I knew I had a winner when I was looking at the flowers through the view finder, but the sunlight was strong and bleached some of the colors (although not in this image!). Despite my crappy German, it was rather obvious that…

Max-Planck Institut für Biophysik, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 24 March 2010 [larger view] This morning, at the Max-Planck Institute, I photographed some cheerful flowers; brilliant red petals, each with a lemon yellow base .. tulips, I believe, but the lighting was all wrong, so I could not capture what I wished to share with you. I shall return soon to try again. But this "miss" does provide me with the opportunity to…

Max-Planck Institut für Biophysik, Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Image: GrrlScientist, 24 March 2010 [larger view] I was walking around at the Max-Planck Institute today, enjoying the spring weather and saw these tiny moss flowers growing in the lawn. The grass has not yet awoken, but the moss was happily growing on the moist earth. I wish you were here with me today, to see these tiny flowers with me.

Image: GrrlScientist, 24 February 2010 [larger view] Today was not very nice, weather-wise, so the spouse and I spent the day hanging out in our favorite bistro, eating, drinking, and working on a few things that we needed to get done. To the causal observer, it probably looked like a wasted day, but for us, it was perfect: it was exactly what we needed.
