Seen yesterday in the local AP feed: Looks like a great partnership to access historic images on the iPhone or iTouch to satisfy pretty much any scholar or history enthusiast:
Duke and Apple to join forces
DURHAM -- Scholars and students who once had to travel to museums or libraries to view collections of historic images can now do so by clicking on their mobile device instead.
With the launch of DukeMobile 1.1, Duke University Libraries now offer the most comprehensive university digital image collection specifically formatted for Apple's iPhone or iTouch devices. It includes thousands of…
The iPhone is a great gadget (as a phone, it's okay. Personally I wish it could be made a bit louder as my ears, they ain't so good at that hearing thing.) Here are the apps I've found that I use the most. (Excluding google maps, the built in email and browser, and the phone functions, of course. Having google maps available so easily really is an amazing piece of functionality to have in a phone, I must say.)
Urbanspoon (free): Restaurant guide with cool select a random place by shaking the iPhone. Links to lots of reviews, which is nice. A friend feature to spy on your friends…
My brother found this, but he is too afraid of the internet to post something in the comments on my previous post about acceleration and the iphone. It turns out that this too awesome to just be in a comment. It deserves its own note.
Anyway, I was looking for acceleration data from the iPhone and this guy put one in his model rocket.

Here is some more detail (with graphs!) about the iPhone model rocket.
Yes, it's a slow dance:
Through the hourglass I saw you, in time you slipped away
When the mirror crashed I called you, and turned to hear you say
If only for today I am adiabatic
Take my pulsed gates away

A few small tips for what to do when starting up programming for the iPhone.
Just a few tips from my experience in learning to program apps for the iPhone.
Don't begin by using Interface Builder. Interface Builder may be a great tool once you understand what is going on, but it obscures a lot of the basics when you are starting up. As a corollary, tutorials which use Interface Builder aren't as useful as those that don't.
Right click is your friend for looking up documentation in Xcode. Want to remember more about UIViewController? Simply right click on "UIViewController" and pull up a…
Over 9 months ago I decided to apply for teaching tenure track jobs. Then the economy took what can best be described as a massive, ill-aimed, swan dive. Thus creating an incredible amount of stress in my life. So what does a CS/physics research professor do when he's stress? The answer to that question is available on the iTunes app store today: arXiview. What better way to take out stress and at the same time learn objective C and write an iPhone app that at least one person (yourself) will use?
What is arXiview? It is yet another arXiv viewer (there are two others available, last I…
The auditorium could have been empty as I focused on the slide overhead. Questions formed out the mist, and my heart pounded as I took a deep breath and began to my raise my hand.
"Da da da dah! Da da da dah, da da da da da da da dah!!"
Oh, NO! The theme song from Indiana Jones! Coming from my backpack! Thousands of eyes turned disapprovingly to stare at my red face. Scrambling frantically over people to reach the aisle, I ran out the back of the room and answered the phone.
"Hi, my name is Tim, and I'm looking for a financial advisor in your area...."
What!! Who is this! The…
Our household is very excited about Thanksgiving.
That's because this Thanksgiving, my husband is cooking a turkey in an egg. A big green egg.
Check back later today, about 5:30 pm, Pacific Standard Time, to see a picture of the turkey. In the meantime, here are some other items that were cooked in the egg.
We've had:
Ribs
Fish
Zucchini
Pizza
If you can cook it in an egg, he will try it.
I used to be the primary cook in our house, but that's all changed since we got the egg. Now, my husband cooks everything, just to see how it will work.
But, now I've learned from Make…
Now that I've downloaded really important applications like a timer for cooking, a program for playing with molecular structures, and an app that lets me listen to NPR on my phone, I'm ready for more.
I'm seriously overwhelmed by the iTunes App store. I found a program for learning human anatomy, a laboratory calculator for making solutions, music programs, wow!
Who knew?
I know some schools are using iPhones for teaching, but I never realized how much was out there.
Deepak recommends something called TouchPhysics.
What are you using? What cool apps do you suggest?

For my birthday this year, my family bought me a new iPhone! Yeah!
So, I've been killing several hours today filling it with cute little iPhone apps. Who knew one little phone could be so much fun?
One app, I enjoy, is called Molecules.
Molecules lets you download structure files from the Protein Data Bank (PDB) and play with the structures on your phone!
