NYC life

A view of eastern Manhattan from a condo on the thirtieth floor on the Upper West Side (ISO, no zoom, no flash). While I was here, I watched a peregrine falcon, Falco peregrinus, repeatedly bomb-dive Pale Male, the famous red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, as he soared past the buildings over the southern end of Central Park. Unfortunately, my camera was unable to capture this drama as it unfolded.

The Big Apple: The city that never sleeps.
On 7th Avenue, looking south at Times Square, NYC, last night.
(Yes, I was standing in traffic, but it wasn't moving, so this
picture only looks as if I risked my life to get it for you, but
if it makes you feel better to think that I was nearly killed getting
this picture, well, go ahead and think that!)

Last night was a good night for walking around Manhattan, as I tend to do when I cannot sleep.

This sweet image is a Christmas/New Year's gift from one of my readers and long-time friends, Bob Levy, to me and to all of you!
The photogrpaher writes; I have been saving this image made last March as my Christmas and News Years present to you. I consider it to be the cutest of the cute from my "Almost-too-cute-for-words" file. I call this Raccoon Brownie because her fur is…

This is the Christmas tree located in my "watering hole", where I will be located this very evening, in fact, hanging out with friends. Unfortunately, I am not sure if I will have free wifi access on Christmas or New Year's days since the public libraries are closed on both holidays, but if I do find free wifi anywhere, it will be here!

Amsterdam Avenue in NYC at Christmas, as seen from the window of my watering hole. The snowflakes were made by the staff and customers by cutting up paper placemats and taping them to the window.

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Christmas Tree, 2007.
This tree stands in the plaza between the New York State Theatre, the Metropolitan Opera House, and Avery Fischer Hall -- I walk past this tree twice every day on my way to the library where I get free wifi. It's a lot prettier at night than it is during the day (I think it is very ugly in the daytime). In the background, you can see the lights from a few buildings that look out over the western side of Central Park in Manhattan.

This is a picture of my friend, Jared, Christmas in NYC, 2007.
He wasn't too keen to have his picture taken, so I told him not
to worry, I am just learning how to use my new digital camera,
so the picture would not look good anyway. Well, I was wrong!
I think it looks great.

Thanks for the camera, Karen! I can already see that I will be spending some serious time learning how to use this thing, because it is really different from a regular camera -- the kind that uses, you know, film and stuff.
