Male Hawk-headed (red fan) parrot, Deroptyus a. accipitrinus, April 2008. Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view]. This species originates in the New World tropics; Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, Guyana and the extreme northwest portion of Brazil. This bird was captive-bred and was purchased for me by a friend. He was shipped to me by the breeder when he was only four and a half months old, so he was quite young…

Female Solomon Islands Eclectus parrot, Eclectus roratus solomonensis, April 2008. Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view]. Not only did I not handfeed this bird, but this is the one bird I live with who is a "used parrot": she spent her formative years with someone else before she came home with me. She unfortunately has a bad wing so she cannot fly as well as I wish she could, even though I leave her fully flighted (I do…
tags: Bonerol, humor, comedy, satire, streaming video Erectile dysfunction is not just limited to humans. This amusing streaming video is a commercial for a new drug meant to solve doggie erectile dysfunction. Of course, if your dog ends up humping your leg for more than four hours at one go, it's time to take him to the vet -- watch it now while your boss is not looking! [0:45].
tags: The Hamster, The Popcorn and The Piano, pets, humor, comedy, streaming video After I ran across the recent news story about the murderous hamster, I couldn't resist sharing this video of a pet Siberian dwarf hamster with you to nullify any bad impressions that you might have about hamsters. This hamster is either a white phase animal or it is in its winter pellage (it's hard to know the difference unless the owner tells you what the animal's light cycle is) [1:15].

tags: researchblogging.org, dog walking, wild birds, ground-nesting birds, conservation, peer-reviewed research Dog walking in natural areas harms wild birds, according to recently published research. Millions of people walk their dogs every day, and many of them enjoy walking their dogs in natural areas where birds and other wild animals live. Unfortunately, a scientific paper was recently published showing that the presence of dogs, even when they are on a leash in these natural areas, seriously interferes with wild birds' reproductive success and even scares many of them away. This…
tags: Talking Cat, streaming video This kitty has a lot to say, don't you think? But what is this cat talking about? The owner's translation; "Hello, Hello, Hello, I Know Hello, Hello Hello Hello. Hello. I'm Alone, I'm on my own, I'm Alone, I know hello." [0:26] More about the cat, Tiggy. My cat can say hello, she only does it when shes looking for you though once you call her or she sees you she'll stop so I had to set the camera up and leave it for awhile until she did it. She does this at least 10 times a day shes does it in the morning when she wants us to get up, in the night when shes…
The smartest person in England has bred a new kind of pet pig, one that fits in the palm of your hand! Chris Murray's Pennywell Miniature pigs recently gave birth to eight piglets at his farm in Devon. According to this article on abcnews.com, Murray wanted a kind of pig "that children can enjoy giving...a cuddle." Hmm....creepy. This is where the meat for those tiny little sandwiches they serve at tea time comes from... Anyhoo, Murray is trying to sell them in pairs so they always have a companion and claims that they are easy to house train. He just sold a couple to some British celebrity…

(flash, ISO, no zoom). Image: GrrlScientist 2008. I managed to capture a few pictures of Orpheus last night which I would have shared with you then, except that my wifi connection disappeared (boo!), so I had to wait until tonight. This picture, like all of the pics I captured last night, are not very good because my parrots have gotten wise to the ways of photography and have…

In this situation, Elektra, my female Solomon Islands Eclectus parrot, perches on my left shoulder, thereby preserving her top-dog status in my little flock of parrots, while Orpheus, the very young male hawk-…

Image: Courtesy of Denise and Dave Bell/Eclectus House. As you might have surmised by looking at the image credit above, I still have not managed to get a picture of my companion, a female Eclectus parrot named Elektra, that pleases me enough to share it with you. Even though I don't have an image of her that is good enough to share with you, I do have a story about Elektra to share with you, thanks…
Orpheus, a male Hawk-headed (red fan) parrot, Deroptyus accipitrinus, Christmas day 2007. This is the best picture I've taken of him so far, but unfortunately, I didn't notice that he had a bit of dried food stuck to the side of his beak until after I took the picture. Of course, after removing it, (wouldn't you know it) I was unable to get another suitable image! Image: GrrlScientist, December 2007.

tags: Deroptyus accipitrinus, hawk-headed parrot, red-fan parrot, pets, birds, avian, parrots I hope to post an update about my parrots every Friday, complete with pictures. Orpheus, a very young male red fan (hawk-headed) parrot, Deroptyus a. accipitrinus, who lives with me (December 2007). GrrlScientist, 2007 [larger view]. Orpheus has been busy this past week, destroying or trying to destroy nearly every material object that I own and behaving in an aggressive manner towards me, so -- sadly -- I clipped his primaries to prevent him from flying freely around my apartment. It made me…
Fortune has announced the year's 101 Dumbest Moments in Business, including Prozac for dogs. "Thank God. We've been so worried since Lucky dyed his hair jet black and started listening to the Smiths." "Eli Lilly wins FDA approval to put Prozac into chewable, beef-flavored pills to treat separation anxiety in dogs." It's not just dogs - cats are treated with SSRI antidepressants, along with psychotherapy. If treatment fails to calm behaviour, the next step is neutering. Imagine that veterinary approach integrating with current practices for humans. Patients who have trouble with adhering to…

Lots of new and curious gift selections are available this year for those of you who had a dog or know a dog owner. All kinds of interesting doggie presents are showing up, like doggie DNA tests and special nutrigenomic doggy diets. And of course, nothing tops the gift of fake testicles for the dog who's never quite recovered from the big operation. It's true, the Bleiman brothers were the first to bring up the idea of presents for pets by suggesting the kitty toilet trainer as a holiday gift. Really, though, is that kind of gift that you give to the cat? or the owner? I just don't think…
