Since I am having trouble getting out to roam the city and take pictures, I thought I'd return us to the upstairs subway platform at AMNH for a couple days to look at a few pieces that I haven't yet shared with you.

The American bison (Bison bison) was almost entirely lost by the beginning of the 20th century, but a number of conservation projects sprang up during this time to try and restore bison populations. The individual animal photographed above calls the Bronx Zoo home, and the institution has a history of bison conservation; in 1905 the American Bison Society was founded at the zoo (with Theodore Roosevelt as honorary president), and by 1907 15 bison were on their way west.
Despite the efforts of conservation groups, though, the number of bison presently roaming North America is just a shadow of…

When I think of kangaroos, the image of large macropods bounding across the Australian outback most readily comes to mind. Oddly enough, though, some kangaroos became adapted to life in the trees and belong to the genus Dendrolagus. Previously I thought there was only one species of tree kangaroo, but apparently there are many, although some of the distinctions between species and subspecies are still contested.

The photographer writes: The plaintive hawk-alarm call of a Gray Squirrel alerted me that a raptor was in my immediate vicinity. As I headed in the direction of the sound I scanned the open branches on the periphery of a meadow where from experience I have learned hunting hawks will often perch. In hardly any time at all I was looking up at a large juvenile female Red-tailed Hawk only about twenty feet…

This image is a gift to my friend PZ Myers, on the occasion of his 92nd birthday, which is today. Cephalopods are PZ's favorite critters and so, because this octopus is hanging around the AMNH subway platform, I thought it would be a fitting tribute to give a photo of this mosaic to him, both for the subject matter and also as a reminder of the happy time when I met him, his wife and daughter in NYC.
I have taken dozens of pictures of what you see here, but because I have a broken arm, the previous images were…

A long-time reader, Jerry, sent some images for me to feature as the "image of the day". He referred to these as "some friends to help you tend your wing".
Wilson's snipe, Gallinago delicata. It is a little unusual to see a shorebird off the the ground, but this fellow decided he needed a higher perch to take in some of the scenery.

The small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinerea) is the smallest otter species presently known. They derive their name from their relatively short claws that do no extend past the fleshy pads on their feet, which actually allows them an increased amount of dexterity when handling their food.

As promised, here's a photo to make up for the somewhat blurry picture from this morning, only this time I decided to use another shot from the polar bear sequence.
