The current Antarctic Trip Vote count is as follows; 3777 - 1556 - 1333 - 1113 - 1078 out of 431 candidates registered. I am now in third place (the second place candidate mysteriously disappeared from contention sometime yesterday). But I need your votes more than ever to recapture first place, so please ask your friends and relatives to vote for me now! If you've already voted, then please encourage your family, friends, colleagues and neighbors to vote for the person whom you think would be best for this unique job: traveling to Antarctica for the month of February 2010 and writing about…
Watching the guy from New Hampshire, 9mm Glock-Man, being interviewed on Hardball made me want to throttle Chris Matthews. There are limits and they are being crossed every day. Stephanie Zvan has something you should read at Almost Diamonds: "To My Conservative Friends and Colleagues"

Hurry up and vote for Ana if you have done so yet today! And if you have, drive to the nearest coffee shop you've not been to lately and vote for her there!!!!!!! She's gaining momentum. Let's do this thing! This photo by Ben Zvan of Analiese Miller, who is also known as The Anthropologist, is the entry in a voting contest that could get Ana a chance at a part in Mad Men (the cable TV thing). It is necessary that you CLICK HERE and vote for Ana by giving her Five Stars (below the photo). Please do this right now, and again tomorrow. Don't vote for any of the other contestants. I've…
Benedict Carey at the Times has an interesting article documenting the harrowing story of Adam Lepak, who has struggled with identity delusions since 2007, when he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident: The diagnosis [given to Adam] was diffuse axonal injury. "The textbook definition is essentially a blow that shuts down the bundle of wires responsible for keeping us conscious," said Dr. Jonathan Fellus, a neurologist at Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in West Orange, N.J., who has overseen Adam's gradual recovery. "It's as if the major highways have taken a hit, and now the…

Sometimes, while working on a story one comes across a data set that's so interesting it just has to be shared. Unfortunately, it can't quite be shoehorned into the tight narrative of the article. That's why God invented the sidebar. My recent story on grit included a sidebar on some incredibly important work from the Perry Preschool, including an important new analysis of the data by James Heckman, et. al. which finds that preschool provides a crucial boost in "non-cognitive" skills. In the 1960s, researchers began a study of 123 African-American children born into poverty. When the children…
This is the Last Day to Vote! Ana remains in the top ten, but is near the bottom of that list owing to cheaters working for the other contestants, I can only assume. I mean, how else would she not be on top? So, go in and vote! Vote! Vote! This photo by Ben Zvan of Analiese Miller, who is also known as The Anthropologist, is the entry in a voting contest that could get Ana a chance at a part in Mad Men (the cable TV thing). by revere, cross-posted from Effect Measure Things have been quiet at CDC but apparently they have been changing. First, Dr. Richard Besser, who acquitted himself ably as Acting Director after January 20 until early June when Obama's new appointment, Dr. Thomas Frieden took over, has decided to leave CDC for television. Yes, television. Many at CDC will be sorry to see him leave. He was "the people's choice" for new Director, as one old CDC hand put it. I had heard that he had once had a TV show in California prior to his CDC days and he's obviously telegenic, articulate and knowledgeable.…

The New York Times led their Sunday edition with an article by John Broder focusing on recent Defense department conclusions on the national security risks of climate change. Here's the key takeaway from the article on what it could mean for re-framing the debate over cap and trade legislation for fence-sitters in the Senate: Much of the public and political debate on global warming has focused on finding substitutes for fossil fuels, reducing emissions that contribute to greenhouse gases and furthering negotiations toward an international climate treaty -- not potential security challenges…
Updated: You can vote again today! I've known Ana for nearly as long as I've lived in Minnesota, and I can vouch for her many talents. She is an accomplished stage and movie actress and model. She is also an…

My long-time friend, Darksyde, published a Sunday Science piece endorsing me and another candidate (neither one of us is in first place) for the Quark Expeditions Antarctica trip. In this entry, Darksyde points out; Quark has left the decision on which blogger to send to the blogosphere. This community has the power to play a key role in choosing who goes and it happens that two registered Kossacks are among a field of great candidates competing for the prize. Both hold a PhD in biology, each is a veteran blogger who has dedicated a huge portion of their life to the pursuit of science, and…
