This exact thing happened to me the other day. Signs (without Mel Gibson) - watch more funny videos I wonder if it is best to just stay away from University campuses.
From Dump Bachmann: In the beginning of this video Bachmann says she is a "former federal tax litigation attorney". Bachmann was introduced on a Fox talking heads show recently as a "federal tax attorney". Actually, if I recall correctly, Bachmann's J.D. is from Oral Roberts (since de-accredited), and her LL.M. in tax law is from William and Mary's Marshall-Wythe School. She has not been legally able on the bar, or whatever they call it, for a long time.
The space shuttle Discovery launched from Cape Canaveral on Sunday with a stowaway -a bat hanging on the outside of the external fuel tank! NASA had hoped the little guy would fly away before launch, but he held on, even after the engines roared, and held on at least as far as observers could follow. Many important details here.
There are 19 new articles in PLoS ONE today. As always, you should rate the articles, post notes and comments and send trackbacks when you blog about the papers. You can now also easily place articles on various social services (CiteULike, Connotea, Stumbleupon, Facebook and Digg) with just one click. Here are my own picks for the week - you go and look for your own favourites: Phase Shifting Capacity of the Circadian Pacemaker Determined by the SCN Neuronal Network Organization: In mammals, a major circadian pacemaker that drives daily rhythms is located in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN…
President Obama has apologized to the chairman of the Special Olympics for his late-night talk show quip equating his bowling skills to those of athletes with disabilities. ..."He expressed his disappointment and he apologized in a way that was very moving. He expressed that he did not intend to humiliate this population," Shriver said .... On Friday, the top bowler for the Special Olympics said he could beat Obama easily. "He bowled a 129. I bowl a 300," Michigan's Kolan McConiughey, who is mentally disabled, told The Associated Press. He has bowled five perfect games since 2005. source…
.... could be Survivor Pharyngula. If you have not seen it you must check it out. ' If you miss it, don't worry, the're going to start showing it on the TV Guide channel.
First, check this out, then I've got a story of my own: "Last week, LAPTOP reported that Office Depot employees were routinely lying to customers about notebook inventory, telling them that systems were out of stock if they didn't want to buy extended warranties or tech services. Now LAPTOP has spoken to more Office Depot associates, one of whom goes by the name Alex and reports widespread altering of prices in his region. He says he even Photoshops higher price tags on clearance notebooks so that associates can tell customers that they're getting a free warranty or tech service, when the…
Stephanie Zvan of Quiche Moraine Dot Com has just posted an item on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) ... the bill that affects how workers can form unions, which is so controversial in a very partisan way at the moment. CLICK HERE

By Alison Bass (cross-posted) At a talk I gave Wednesday at George Washington University, someone in the audience asked why there seemed to be an inordinate number of psychiatrists on the take to the drug industry. Was it something about the specialty of psychiatry itself or the individuals involved? I have often pondered the same, especially since this is not simply an anecdotal observation. In 2007, The New York Times examined the payments made to all doctors in Minnesota in the years since that state passed one of the first laws in the nation requiring the public disclosure of payments…
Funny! From Jimmy Fallon: Last night, Michael Showalter (from Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, The State, your dreams) made a cameo on the show. He and our head writer, A.D. Miles, played a couple of Columbia grad students on spring break. Things got pretty scandalous! Really funny... but totally off base. It's more like Girls Gone Wild... I promise! -via everyday scientist-
Straight from XKCD... I had this exact same reaction. Now that we're on the topic. I don't like federal money going to pay bonuses but seriously... this money was promised long ago and it's already been given out. Using the tax code to take it back? Wow this is seriously a real cluster @#$!
A new study published online in Current Biology has analyzed the results from over 48 population studies in the Caribbean from 1955 - 2007, and the results aren't pretty. Caribbean fish have been declining in a big way for at least the past decade, and the culprit isn't commercial fishing. The study used meta analysis to look for trends across trophic groups, locations, fishing status, and overall density at over 300 different reefs. What they found wasn't good. Not only are species falling from fishing pressures, species which aren't commercially fished are losing numbers, too, suggesting…
Gravity Pods isn't a new game, having hit the net back in 2007, but it's certainly worth a look if you haven't tried it before. The physics-based game runs on a simple premise: get your green rocket to the purple swirly thing. To do this you'll need to navigate the gravitational fields of numerous 'pods', which will pull your rocket off course. Of course, like the boffins at NASA / ESA you must learn to use these gravitational fields to slingshot your craft to its destination. There's a lot of trial and error involved, and your map is slowly painted in delightful swirly patterns showing…
I wouldn't say that I'm the funniest person I know - unless, of course, people laughing at you counts as being 'funny'. I'm one of those people who occasionally has good moments, but really, I'm funniest when I don't intend to be. Like that one time I was making fun of a friend's over-exposed cleavage by shouting in a WalMart "Look out folks! She's gonna blow!" only to turn around and see the look of pure horror on the extremely pregnant woman behind me who presumed I was talking about her. I find that I often say things that sound bad out of context.* Well maybe I can learn to be properly…
