Expelled poised to become number 2

Even as Expelled promotes itself as "the #1 Documentary of 2008," its box office take is being overtaken by Religulous (2008):

EXPELLED: NO INTELLIGENCE ALLOWED
Domestic Total Gross: $7,690,545
Widest Release: 1,052 theaters
In Release: 56 days / 8 weeks

RELIGULOUS
Domestic Total as of Oct. 16, 2008: $7,622,104
Widest Release: 568 theaters
In Release: 16 days / 2.3 weeks

Note that Religulous did that with half the theaters and in 1/3 the time.

More like this

On Sunday, Chris Mooney and Randy Olsen both tried to make the case that Ben Stein's "Evolution Caused the Holocaust" movie was a success at the box office. Both of them have been rather spectacularly condemned for calling Expelled a success, but I'm not sure that they're entirely wrong. I just…
Chris Mooney, who every day seems to transmogrify more and more into a creationist apologist, makes the case that Expelled! is a box office success. He seems almost giddy about it in his post on the topic. I'm sure Chris will be blaming PZ Myers, me, the rest of us people for part of this. But…
How stupid can they get? First it's discovered that the makers of the stupid propaganda movie were stealing some of their cell animations from XVIVO, and now it is revealed that other segments were ripped off from PBS. It's as if there isn't a single bit of creativity in the whole movie — they can…
Chris Mooney is claiming Expelled is a box office success. Documentaries don't make a very big splash typically, but whatever you think about the impact of Expelled, the fact that Fahrenheit 9/11 will go down as a much bigger success illustrates the contrast between depth and breadth of feeling…

Hmmm - must be all that, erm, framing, doncha' know. Now, if only someone would mock and ridicule creationists....

Damn - I meant "ID Creationists" - sorry, long day. On the plus side, I did have a student ask me "but why are there still monkeys". Apparently a teacher once told him that we (humans) were losing our pinkies since we didn't need them, but he didn't mention banana's or crocoducks, and was only vaguely familiar with the earth being "4,000 years old". He did seem curious, in a limited way, so there is hope.

Quite appropriate, since Expelled is full of "number two."

But remember, Expelled was an astounding success, right?

Oh Nisbet & Mooney, eat your hearts out. Your little, petty, activist-wannabe hearts.
