Is it Leia's fault?

No_Nym, guestblogging on Bitch PhD suggests that Princess Leia is to blame for the dearth of women in science and engineering...

Princess Leia - Return of the Jedi "slave girl" version 3.0

Hm. Not sure.

Her point on Dora the Explorer is good though, bringing in cousin Diego was a major sell-out.

Still not nearly as bad as "Princess Disney" or "Barbie".

Is this a good time to link to a favourite David Brin rant on the Evil That Is The Star Wars Meme?
I worried about this until a) Jar-Jar Binks and b) the Jedi attack at the arena to rescue He Who Can Not Act
Proof conclusive.

UPDATE: read Shelley's post on Retrospectacle - she makes the case for Leia well, although I still tend to side with David (Brin) that the overall tone of Star Wars is antiscientific.
It is not Leia's fault, but that dweeb of a brother she got stuck with.

Steinn over at The Dynamics of Cats brought my attention to an interesting topic intially broached over at Bitch PhD. That issue is a little pet peeve of mine: the representation of women in media, advertising, and entertainment. Specifically, guest blogger No_Nym asks: Am I the only one who thinks…
It was high times for the Rebel Alliance at the end of Return of the Jedi (1983). Across the galaxy, crowds rejoiced at the destruction of the second Death Star and the apparent defeat of Emperor Palpatine. Princess Leia Organa, who two films earlier had seen her home planet exploded for sport, was…
Why, Sithmas, of course! Just ask Palpatine if you don't believe me: Yeah, this beats Squidmas hands down. Also, the Star Wars geek in me can't help but mention that Emperor Palpatine is more than happy to answer many other of your questions, including "Why didn't you kill Jar-Jar Binks?"; the…
[This post is tremendously nerdy Star Wars fan ranting. There is no physics. You have been warned!] Let me get this straight: I tremendously enjoyed Star Wars: Episodes 1-3. I enjoyed them in all their badly-acted, incoherently characterized, effects-dependent glory. Every single one of them I…

dude, you should have labelled this "not work safe."

The dumb filter they have where I work would probably block the whole page anyway.

Hi, Steinn.

If you look, I also linked to Brin's stories on Star Wars. I think I'll blog more reasons to hate Lucas next week. See also my comments to Shelley.
