Expanding Beyond All Understanding
If the universe does in fact become dominated by Λ - dark energy drive acceleration, then in a surprisingly short time the Milky Way will be rather lonely, as all unbound nearby galaxies will have receded beyond our event horizon.

When you take a look out at the Universe, past the objects in our own solar system, beyond the stars, dust and nebulae within our own galaxy, and out into the void of intergalactic space, what is…

I'm a pretty optimistic guy. Okay, I'm a really optimistic guy. But even my optimism has its limits when bashing up against the cold hard reality of what experiments plus our understanding of the laws of physics tells us about the universe. Here are my top three most depressing facts about the…
Nothing we can currently see can become completely invisible, since our past light now is completely contained within our past light cone at some future date. But the galaxies that don't form a bound complex with us will get exponentially large redshifts and be extremely faint. If you plug z = -0.998 into my cosmolgy calculator you get a light travel time of -100 Gyr. Thus in 100 Gyr the Universe will be 500 times bigger, the CMB temperature is 5.5 mK and much fainter than the galactic foreground, and all the easily visible galaxies will be in a bound system. So Lawrence Krauss predicts the death of cosmology.
"Surprisingly short" in a relative way.
