It's Official!

Yes. I said I wanted this job. And, in a very new and interesting way, after a fun interview, I got it. Signed and faxed the contract yesterday. Will be in San Francisco for a little while in July, then telecommute afterwards. Can pajamas be deducted as tools one needs for the job? Exciting!

Talking Science is a new non-profit that's dedicated to bringing the latest discoveries, innovations, controversies and cures out of the lab and to the public. It was founded by Ira Flatow, host of NPR's Science Friday. As a part of this effort, Talia Page is one of the bloggers for Science Friday…
The series of interviews with some of the participants of the 2008 Science Blogging Conference was quite popular, so I decided to do the same thing again this year, posting interviews with some of the people who attended ScienceOnline'09 back in January. Today, I asked Betul Kacar of the Counter…
Today I have to be very, very careful, because Liz Allen is the person who hired me for PLoS and is my immediate supervisor. This means, in PLoS terms, that we work great as a team, talk on the phone a couple of times per week and exchange approximately five gigazillion e-mails every day, enjoying…
Compared to the Swedish system, academic recruitment is extremely swift in the UK. In Scandyland, it's typically 7 months from the application deadline to the rejection letter, mainly because of slow external referees. The worst I've seen was 14 months. But in the UK, it's all done in a matter of…

Congratulations!

Congratulations Bora! PLoS got themselves a wonderful, hard working, fun, and dedicated employee. I too am VERY happy that you and your family will not be leaving NC. Now you can do some Coworking with us! :)

Awesome! I can't think of anyone more qualified! I did my honeymoon in San Francisco and loved it, so be sure to see some sights while you're seeing the sites. :)

Congratulations! And even if you do need to move to SF someday, it's an awesome place to live (I'm always partial to the west coast even though I'm living on the east coast now).

Congratulations Bora. However. I was brought up as a Lutheran xian and I do not describe myself as a xian, or Lutheran, atheist. Either you are a xian or you are an atheist. Either you believe in your parents' mythology or you don't. That applies to whatever religion. One cannot be a hypenated atheist.

Congratulations, Bora! I am really happy for you. If I were in your shoes (and they accounted for cost of living), I would move to San Francisco. I had a job offer in Berkeley back in the 1980s, but they didn't account for the steep difference in cost of living, and when they finally did, they increased my work hours to 70-80/week for roughly the same quality of life here. I had to turn it down. It is good to know you are still here in the area, though, and will be. I still owe you dinner!

Take care my friend and thank you for your support from the HIV/AIDS community.

Congratulations, Bora! PLoS scored themselves an incredibly hardworking and well-connected science blogging pioneer possessing unbridled passion and creativity. It's a win-win proposition for you both. I am so proud of you and happy for you and your family.

For future consideration, I think that "PLoS Chapel Hill" has a nice ring to it. Congratulations again, friend!

Too cool for school! And, I believe Starbucks AND pajamas will be approved tax write-offs as a needed expense because of the time-differential. Just remember NOT to sign up for the Dr. Dino Tax Tips, and you will be fine.

Re bernarda

For the information of Mr. bernarda, Judaism is more then a religion, it is also an ethnicity, just like being a Serb which also applies to Mr. Bora.

Wow Bora, that is great news! Congratulations to you and to PLoS. And you don't even have to move to SF, SF salary, without SF costs-of-living. It's the best of two worlds. You'll have to post a picture of yourself in pajamas before we can decide whether they could be written off.

Wow wow wow!! Go Bora!! I'm so happy for you. PLoS is so lucky to have you!

That sooooo rocks out loud! Congratulations! PLoS doesn't know how lucky they are to have gotten you! This is absolutely the perfect way for the nicest guy in the world to have gotten the niftiest job!
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[delurk]

Congrats! San Fransisco IS great! Are you sure you don't want to move there? Well, Chapel Hill is good too... Good luck in your new venture!

[/delurk]

Congratulations!! :)

Having gotten a job I absolutely love just over three months ago, I quite understand that this is a big, big deal. I hope you find what I've been finding -- the more you work at the job, the more you like it.

Telecommuting is also awesome. When I was working from home more often, I used to tell people I had a 30-second commute, and that was if I went by way of the bathroom and the fridge on the way to my office. *grin*

Good luck!

That is a really impressive move by PLoS. They got the best person for the job. Congratulations!

All the best to you, Bora, in your exciting new job. Congratulations! Dang, PLoS sounds like fun.

Oh, and don't forget to finish your dissertation! ;-)

Exemplary in labor, exemplary in triumph.

Hearty congratulations, Bora.

I tried ealier to find a Serbian phrase for "Good look with your new job"....see, I was not being presumptuous after all.

Congratulations!

Good call by PLoS too

Now that you're rich and famous, do you think you...

Nah, aint gonna do that to you. I will wish you and PLoS a profitable and satisfying partnership. 'Tis a grand experiment you are embarked upon, and it could have a great impact on the enterprise we call science for generations to come. Success to you both.

Congratulations, Bora! And welcome to California - even if briefly. Tell your wife its not so bad - even here in the great central valley. Feel free to drop by if you are in the vicinity of Fresno (we're sort of near the gateway to several Sierra Nevada parks, after all)!

And PLoS is very cool indeed - we're working up some manuscripts headed their way soon.

Oh, and git that dang dissertation done, as I'm supposed to remind you! :-)

Congratulations, Bora! That's very cool--you and PLoS are both fortunate in this collaboration.

And PZ says to remind you to get the dissertation done. Hell, if *I* finished....well, you know.

SLC, see my comments on ethnicity at PZ's thread on Bora's job. And, I wish Bora the greatest success with it.

I'm late! Many Congratulations! And all the very best - I'm sure PLoS One will soon be moving ahead of Nature/Cell and gang :D

Great news. Technology opportunities today offer ways to significantly improve scientific communication. We need some people that truly understand open internet communication to help PLOS have the impact that is possible. I look forward to seeing what you can help create.

Is the that the sound of the PLoS servers groaning from the anticipated weight of all your new posts? Well done Bora.
