The first Eurovision contest that I remember, back in 1974:

Wow. My first thought was "hey, wasn't that the year ABBA won?"

A bit of googling, and the answer is yes.

And I'm an American? I'm not supposed to even know Eurovision exists... but I am a Eurovision junkie. (Best ever--Lithuania's "We are the winners of Eurovision". I am a fan of the campy aspects, not the serious pretensions.)
