Linux has long been the champion of cute names. For example,
right now I am downloading (via bittorrent)

Linux, which is named after an Italian dessert (
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabayon" rel="tag">Zabaglione).
I must say, though, that the best name for a Linux distribution is this:
A Slackware for your Macintosh, or
Slackintosh, is a Linux distribution designed to run on your
PowerPC-based hardware. Version 11.0 was released today: "We are proud
to announce that Slackintosh 11.0 has been released! Slackintosh 11.0
includes Linux 2.6.17.13 with glibc 2.3.6, KDE 3.5.4 and much more.
Gotta love the icon, too.

? but why? Unix is built into Mac Os X. I don't understand why I would need this when I can pop up a terminal window at any time and type Unix commands, easy as pie.
It is all about choice. If you are happy with Mac OS X, as many people are, there is no specific reason to change. If you have a machine with a PPC chip and an older version of the OS, Slackintosh or some other distro would be an improvement.
This is good to know about. Since Apple has changed its new machines to Intel chips, the days of their support (and software suppliers' support) for PPC machines are numbered. A Linux distro would keep may of these machines useful.
