Weekend at the movies

Yes.

I went to see 'It.'

'It'. The Movie everyone has been talking about for months.

ERV readers might not think It was a movie I would be into, but it was awesome!!!

'The Fall' was really really good*.

Ive been looking forward to it ever since PZ brought it to my attention a few months ago. Im not so much into the 'Harry Potter' stuff, but Ive always been a huge fan of childrens/young adult fantasy, so if you like that stuff, youll like this movie. I mean, its like a kids movie...

But its rated R.

Its like a fairy tale + the ultra violence.

But it could have used more violence.

Anyway, I would have loved this movie when I was little, and I would have gotten an insane crush on Charles Darwin. The actor who plays him is absolutely adorable, and Darwins story/lines are fantastic.

The little girl steals the damn show though. Holy crap. She plays the daughter of Romanian immigrants (happily, I happened to see the movie with a couple or Romanians, and they filled me in on a few Romanian jokes planted in the movie) and she is so god damned funny! Theres a point in the trailer where the male lead asks her if she is trying to save his soul-- the lead up to that is hysterical-- no subtle Christianity pushing :) But the priest is a bad guy :P

Good movie-- glad I saved my EXPELLED bucks :P

* You all didnt think I meant 'Sex in the City', right? LOL!

Saw the movie over the weekend. Mrs.Coturnix and Coturnietta read the first book (Coturnietta is now reading the second) so we went together. I am a horrible movie critic - I usually kick back, munch popcorn, and enjoy every piece of crap on the screen. Heck, I love B-monster movies. So, back to…
PZ, Bora, Orac, John, and others have all put up posts about a list of the 50 most significant Science Fiction and Fantasy works of the last fifty years. As the reigning Geek-Lord of ScienceBlogs, I figured that I had to weigh in as well. Here's the list: the one's that I've read are bold-faced…
No, I'm not talking about Harry Potter books-- there won't be any more of those for a while, at least until J. K. Rowling decides she really needs to buy Bolivia. I'm talking about "Harry Potter" the cultural phenomenon-- the inescapable, endlessly hyped mass-culture Event that everybody talks…

I actually thought that you meant Iron Man.

This will have to go on my to-watch list though.

I was thinking Ironman, too!

I thought you meant The Strangers. Well, my mother and two of my sisters went to see it.

PZ mentioned "The Fall" and now you wrote about "The Fall" and I'm clueless about it.

I'm clueless about lots of things! Anyway, I looked up the trailer and it looks like a great film!

I shall make a date with my long-suffering wife and have a Grand Time! Thanks.

I feel compelled to point out that old fairy tales are usually plenty violent. I seem to recall Hansel and Gretel not only escaping the hag, but shoving her in the oven and having a feast as well.

And let's not forget Little Red Riding Hood either (depending on version) gutting the Big Bad Wolf to rescue her grandmother or getting eaten herself. . . .

And one of Cinderella's stepsisters actually managed to fit into the fur slipper (the glass was a mistranslation from French). She had to cut off part of her foot to do it.

Just a few of the more mild examples from your Friendly Local Fan of Mythology and Folklore.

Abbie,im glad you are not a SITC girl, that would have shattered my glorified image of you LOL....

Thanks for the tip with "The Fall",trailer looks awesome,I hadnt even heard about it.Cant wait for it to come out here in Oz!

I thought you meant Indiana Jones IV, actually ...

@Rev Yes, yes it is. I've been looking forward to it, too, although its only playing in a relatively distant theater from me.

Yeah, old myths and tales from back when public executions were entertainment for the masses were very violent. In Cinderella I believe crows take the eyes out of the stepsisters and stepmother as well as the foot chopping, and the version I heard had each sister needing to chop off a part of their foot to fit in. Ones involving animals and the forest were made particularly gruesome to encourage children to not wander out into the forests even if the kid saw something interesting in it, as back then getting lost in the forest was much more serious.

I thought it was interesting, and certainly better than most of what passes for cinema today. My main gripe is poor pacing--the emotional turns weren't played for maximum effect and felt like any other scene. It lacked the epic feel that the trailers seemed to promise.

Good stuff though.

Unfortunately, that movie is not anywhere near where I am (Mobile, Alabama)...guess I wait for DVD...poor me.

Whoops - wrong website! I meant to point to HERE.

Check out the ratings:

Netherlands:12 | USA:R

Did I mention I'm from a cool country?

I saved my Expelled bucks too! :-) Instead I went to see Sex and the City...
