The letter.

In my faculty mailbox today:

After a review of the tenure evaluations and recommendations of the appropriate committees and administrators ... I am pleased to inform you that your service to the University merits the award of tenure. I am also pleased to inform you that you have been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, effective August 21, 2008.

One less thing to worry about while working through the grading.

More like this

Over at Reassigned Time, "Dr. Crazy" offers a remarkably sane post on what tenure means to her:
I have a number of friends at various institutions that are up for tenure this year. Every school is on its own unique schedule, of course, so some of my friends are finding out right about now, officially or unofficially (mostly unofficially) whether they will be tenured or not.
Over at Pure Pedantry, Jake Young has an anti-tenure post that repeats one of the classic mistaken arguments:
Your must-read academic link of the week is today's Inside Higher Ed article by Gary Lewandoski, with the provocative title: Stop Trying to Get Tenure and Start Trying to Enjoy Yourself.

Hey congrats!

Your future students, your philosophy colleagues worldwide and your blog readers are all fortunate that your University has seen fit to endorse your hard efforts over the past years of professordom in this fashion. Congratulations!

Congratulations! Well done.

YAY! CONGRATS! And congratulations to San Jose State University on a successful recruitment!

You'd better update your profile blurb now. (-;

Congratulations! Now you can tell it like it is, research what you like, and jockey for position in the department on a twenty-year plan.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Congratulations! And nice of them to let you know before the long weekend, so you can spend it celebrating.

You've been a favorite SciBling of mine and my husband's for a while now, so on behalf of both of us congratulations.

Well Done Janet.

Must come as something of a relief. No matter how confident you may be of something, waiting to hear is never easy.

We never doubted, but as per Duke's motto trust, but verify. Just as I predicted, you heard 2 days after we left the jurisdiction. Sorry we're not there to celebrate with you, but we will definitely celebrate for you.

Now back to your grading, Cinderella.

Now you should help other people get their tenure, like that Gonzalez guy.

I would say that your university is very fortunate to have you as a faculty member. Congratulations and many wishes for a great and successful future.

Congratz girl, take the sprogs out on the town!!

I believe the 'correct' thing to do for tenure is to get what is called a tenure tattoo. This tattoo is specifically for ones face and usually covers over 30% of the visible skin.

I look forward to seeing yours.

Way to go!!! Now get down to the mall, all by yourself, and get yourself a really fancy tenure ring or tenure scarf or something. Reward yourself!

Doctorates in P-chem AND Philosophy? When did you sleep? Very cool transition, though.

Coincidentally a friend of mine, in the Dept wherin I toil as staff polloi, just defended her dissertation yesterday and will soon be arriving at her first academic posting at...San Jose State.

CONGRATS!!!. What an awesome accomplishment. I'm sure the t-shirt will arrive shortly.

Congrats on such a momentous accomplishment. Of course we all knew your service merited the award of tenure; the issue was whether or not you'd receive it. Glad to see an expected result. Nice as well to see the litany of accolades here, which is also--though not quite as--impressive.

Congratulations on the amazing accomplishment!!

Major congratulations! Welcome to the world of academic freedom where you can not only pursue novel, controversial lines of research, but you can call your chair a self-absorbed, know nothing jerk and get away with it.

Um, let's be original -

Congratulations!

You did check that the envelope was addressed to you, didn't you? It could be embarrassing otherwise.

Congratulations!

Late to the party, but let me add my congratulations as well.

I'm glad the good work you do here was part of that decision.

So nice to see one of the good guys win in real life.

What do the sprogs think? Do they get it?

Congrats!

Well done Janet!

YAY!!! Primarily due to the Friday Sprog Blogs, right? I feel like someone on my own family just got tenure, so MAJOR LEAGUE CONGRATUALTIONS.

Congrats, coach Janet, er. Dr. Free-Ride!

Hey, hey! Great news, and congrats!
As Archie Bunker would say, "Whoop dee doo, whoop dee doo!"
(Thought I'd give you an old school celebratory cheer since everyone else these days is using Homer Simpson's "Whoo-hoo!")
