Keep in mind that Girl Genius is set in a steampunk fantasy world with tons of weird science. A heterodyne is basically a wizard who uses technology to actuate his magic. When inspired a heterodyne can perform feats of technology that are down right magical. GG is basically making fun of technological wonder stories from the mid to late 19th century on up to, in a sense, today.
Alan you mean a spark. Sparks are the technology wizards in Girl Genius. Heterodynes are a particularly dynasty which the main character Agatha is descended from (this isn't a massive spoiler one finds this out early in volume I).
I have all 7 volumes of Girl Genius on dead trees and am awaiting the publication of the eighth. This is fun stuff.
