Who are the cultural integrators?

On a recent diavlog between Dayo Olopade and Reihan Salam the role of minorities as integrators and catalysts for cultural ferment & change was brought up. Minorities being minorities naturally by definition would, one assumes, be the ones assimilating and integrating into the majority matrix. 70% of the American population is non-Hispanic white, so assuming a random mixing situation this segment will be preponderant. But there's a problem I have with this narrative: it ignores population structure. Integration and assimilation are real dynamics of American society, but obviously so is segregation. Asian Americans may form ~5% of the population of the United States, but as a point of fact very few Asian Americans experience being 1/20th of the a local population. Rather, may Asian Americans cluster in several geographical locales where their frequency is much higher than 5% (think West Coast urban areas and Hawaii), while many experience living as one of very few Asians in a given area.

But the same applies to white Americans. There are vast swaths of the United States where white Americans are not 70% of the population, rather, they're closer to 95% of the population. And there are prominent regions where they are closer to 50% or less of the population. And because non-Hispanic white Americans are around 70% of the population, even if a small number of them are integrators by the function of being a minority they may be very numerous indeed.

Consider the numbers for interracial marriage.

Married Couples in the United States in 2006
White Wife Black Wife Asian Wife Other Wife
White Husband 50,224,000 117,000 530,000 489,000
Black Husband 286,000 3,965,000 34,000 45,000
Asian Husband 174,000 6,000 2,493,000 13,000
Other Husband 535,000 23,000 41,000 558,000

The above is from a Wikipedia article drawn from the 2006 American Community Survey. Here is what they say about the specific groups:

-White Americans are the least likely to marry interracially, although in absolute terms white Americans are involved in interracial marriages more than any other racial group. 1.9% of married white American women and 2.2% of married white American men have a non-white American spouse. 1.0% of married white American men are married to an Asian American woman, and 1.0% of married white American women are married to a man classified as "other".

-3.7% of married African American women and 8.4% of married African American men have a non-African American spouse. 6.6% of married African American men, and 2.8% of married African American women, have a white American spouse. Only 0.1% of married African American women are married to an Asian American man, representing the least represented marital combination.

-There is a notable disparity in the rates of exogamy by Asian American males and females. Only 25% of Asian American/White American marriages involve an Asian American male and white American female, and only 15% of Asian American/African American marriages involve an Asian American male and a African American female. 19.5% of married Asian American women and 7.2% of married Asian American men have a non-Asian American spouse.

-88% of foreign-born White Hispanic males are married to White Hispanic females. In terms of out-marriage, Hispanic males who identify as White have non-Hispanic wives more often than other Hispanic men. U.S-born White women of non-Hispanic heritage are more likeley to marry Hispanic who identified as some other race (19%) than White Hispanic women (2%).

No surprise. Whites outmarry at low frequencies. Blacks more. Asians more. And Hispanics (Latinos) are confused because though half of them identify as white, another half identify as "Other race," and the various combinations might not necessarily be exogamy with that culture. But in any case, here are the raw numbers:

# of Whites who outmarry 2,131,000
# of Blacks who outmarry 978,004
# of Asians who outmarry 798,000
# of Other who outmarry 1,146,000

If you looked at the frequency data you would assume that Asian Americans play an essential role as integrators because of the rates. But because there are so many more black Americans, there are actually more of them who outmarry in absolute terms. In other words, blacks are involved in a higher proportion of interracial marriages than Asian Americans. And of course, despite the strong white tendency toward endogamy, because this group is so numerous it naturally has an outsized representation in the absolute numbers. This makes sense since in marriages people have to pair off. Focusing on minorities who have to integrate or interact misses a part of the equation, as whites who interact with these minorities are not simply passive receivers of cultural manna.

This doesn't negate the role that minorities play as a catalysts in the process of cultural evolution, but large numbers of whites experience what it is to be a minority today. As a fraction it is naturally smaller than other groups, but because whites are so numerous in absolute terms they are substantial.

Let's look at this another way. The GSS has a variable, ACQMYRAC, which asks the racial background of one's acquaintances. The question was asked in 2006, relatively recently. Here are the breakdowns for blacks and whites:

Proportion of same race as respondent among all acquaintances
  White Black
Almost all the same race as you 38.3 26.3
Mostly the same race as you 43.7 27.2
About evenly divided 15.6 36.5
Mostly a different rage than you 1.7 7.2
Almost all a different race than you 0.7 2.6

It is what you would expect. More blacks than whites have diverse circles of friends. 18% of whites had a circle of friends which were evenly divided, or majority-minority. For blacks, 46.3% had evenly divided, or majority-non-black, networks. But the raw numbers are different. The proportions above who are integrators as N's are 185 and respectively 71. If I weighted the proportions by the frequency of whites and blacks in the population a little over double as many whites would have racially diverse circles of friends as opposed to blacks (similar to the GSS raw numbers).

Hi!
I am somewhat confused about your statement of the strong endogamic tendency of whites. I think your choice of value for description of endogamy is impractical. (or I might have misunderstood you).
According to your data 2,1 % of whites outmarry, while 6,05 % of blacks (assuming equal number of the two genders). If one considers outmarriage without any bias, whites would outmarry at 30% rate (the ratio of non-whites). I think one should compare the outmarriage rate to the unbiased expectation, so an adequate descriptor for the endogamy of whites would be : 0,021/0,3= 0,07.
According to the Wikipedia (for now, I do not need very precise data) there are 12% blacks. So I can calculate the same thing for blacks: 0,0605/0,88=0,06875 which is almost the same as for whites. So I fail to see any significant difference in the tendency for endogamy. For the asian americans it follows (assuming 5% of the total pop.): 0,1335/0,95=0,14. So asian americans are significantly less endogamic.

I meant less endogamic. Whites and Blacks have an outmarriage rate of approximately 7% of the (unbiased) expected. Asians have 14%, thus they are less endogamic.

One has to consider something. Unlike whites and Asians, most blacks do not marry anymore and those that do have a high divorce rate. My point is using "marriage" as an indicator is problematic. What would be more instructive is who is procreating with who. What are the race of parents. The problem is the vast majority of states don't keep this info, often men don't have to be on the birth certificate and a black woman for example, might declare her child black but he has a non-African American father. I personally know two people like this (by coincidence) who have Puerto Rican fathers, but they usually say they are "black" and don't add the "Hispanic qualifier". One person has a Spanish last name, the other does not (he uses his mother's maiden name).
