Hoverfly nectaring on frogfruit near Anahuac NWR VIS 7-8-07.

This is a much-sharpened picture of a difficult and fast-moving subject. Hoverflies are bee mimics. Notice, however, the big eyes of the fly (q.v., movie "The Fly").

How big are these things? I saw some fairly small insects that look just like this in the garden the other day, but not for long.

The size of the species I photographed is probably a skosh smaller than a European honeybee. Although Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge has a large and diverse butterfly garden of around an acre, I found on July 8 that I was seeing a lot of the action at the buttonbushes and on frogfruit in the lawn, all in a limited area very close to the Visitor Information Station.
