How to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Like They Do in the Old Country

Okay, so today's the Big Day and as you might know, Americans like any excuse to drink to excess, even if that means we have to import and celebrate holidays from other countries. So, if you are American, here's a little video guide for how to celebrate St. Paddy's Day like the Irish do [2:46]

“‘You are a different kind of Irishman, Goll,’ was all she said. ‘Every Irishman is a different kind of Irishman,’ said Goll.” -Charles Brady Sure, we're all a little bit Irish today. We celebrate in a plethora of different ways, the most common of which is to prominently display the color most…
Sometimes the items falling into my in-box are totally random and unconnected. Sometimes they fit together very nicely. Then, there are the times they fit together in a random and unconnected sort of way. I moved to Boston, from Upstate New York, when the Governor was a King. I only vaguely…
And a Beannachtai na Feile Padraig too! (I've left out the accents cuz MovableType eats them). Tomorrow, in Boston, we celebrate one of the goofiest holidays EVAH! No, I don't mean St. Patrick's Day--which is the Irish Purim*, and has perfectly...sensible traditions associated with it. I mean…

I've actually been in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day and it was closed! At least the place where I was was essentially closed - for the very reason that it's a holiday!

I'm sure the larger cities were humming but I don't see any reason to celebrate St. Patrick's Day any differently than you'd celebrate any other day off - enjoy the time, spend it with family and/or friends/loved ones, and relax!

But why limit ourselves to Slighe Pádraig on March 17th? Those of British heritage also celebrate Slighe Anndra (of Scotland) on Nov 30th, St. George (of England) Apr 23rd, and Dewi Sant of Wales) on March 1st.

Don't deny yourselves these opportunities! In fact, given that these days seem to be mostly jammed into one tiny stretch of the year, it's probably wise to open up the celebration to other saints, too. There has to be a saint's day on each day of the year, doesn't there? If there isn't, we'll make one!
