Grey-crowned Crane (Balearica regulorum). Lighting is rough but the neck looks grey and golden crown of black-tipped pointed feathers. Can't identify East from South subspecies but I presume East given the location.

Grey crowned crane, fully mature adult (two years old plus) judging by the density of the feathers on the crown and the width of the neck in relation to the head. (These are just my personal observations from raising this species)

Aw, beat me to it. I agree, definitely a Grey Crowned Crane--note the neck color and the (duh) crown. Probably the Crested subspecies. The difference is really only in the size and face, so you can't tell from the picture, but in Kenya you're not likely to get the South African subspecies.

Sorry for the off-topic post, but is there a permanent URL which always goes to the current Mystery Bird?

I'd like to email it to my less blog-literate friends.

Best,
