I've been having a rough time since my return from Finland, so I have not done as much writing as I should -- please accept my apologies for this! I have half a dozen essays and book reviews that I am working on, but I lack all confidence right now, so I have not published any of them. However, I expect I'll do so within the next week or so. I hope. So what caused all this upset, especially at a time when I should be really happy? Shortly after I returned from Finland, I found two notices in my apartment mailbox (which is mostly a trash receptacle) from collection agencies who are preparing…

Do you remember how I've been campaigning to save several science-y blog carnivals from oblivion? Well, since one blog carnival is currently being revived, partially due to my noisemaking, I am taking my support one step further: I am hosting the upcoming issue of the Circus of the Spineless on 6 April. So this means that I need your help. If you have written a "translation" of a scientific paper, or an essay, a photoessay or if you have a stunning image of a squishy (or crusty) animal that lacks a backbone -- not including American politicians -- to share with the world, please send the…

Are you upset about the latest AIG scandal where millions of dollars of the American taxpayers' bailout money were misused to pay special bonuses to their corporate executives -- the very same executives who swindled thousands of their clients and ran the company -- and the world's economy -- into the ground? Of course, at the same time that 73 AIG executives are receiving bonuses of one million dollars or more, tens of millions of American taxpayers are facing unemployment, crushing debt, and loss of their housing, health insurance, and even the ability to buy food! If this makes you angry…

My original hometown of Seattle,Washington, is experiencing a profound loss, a loss that has been or will soon be experienced by other cities throughout the country. Seattle is losing their morning newspaper, the Seattle P-I. Today, the last print version of "the P-I" will be published, although the paper will maintain a presence on the internet as an electronic-only newspaper -- the largest newspaper to do so -- so far. Certainly, as a regular reader of five electronic newspapers who doesn't subscribe to any print newspapers, I am part of the problem. However, I do eagerly read the NYTimes…
