LOL--what?

PZ seems to think that the whole "LOL" thing has gone too far. He may be right. In fact, I've even commented on it before.

Even though I have a bit of trouble wrapping my mind around the whole "LOLCats" phenomenon and its various bizarre spinoffs, I do have to admit that I've found one LOL spinoff that's pretty darned amusing.

Are you ready for LOLQuacks?

Some examples:

OK, I know the above has nothing to do with quackery, but as a fan of the Fantastic Four and a connoisseur of pareidolia, I couldn't resist. On with a few homeopathy-related examples:

This one is amusing because I stood in the very place where the subject of this photo is standing:

Even the originator of the woo that it homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann himself, is not immune to the LOL treatment:

Another in the sadly delayed wrapping-up of my photo-a-day project. These are all pictures from a hike in the Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve over in Clifton Park. We took the kids over there one time, but a thunderstorm started coming in before we got very far. While the kids were at my parents', I…
This was kind of a dispiriting week in a lot of ways, but as mentioned in yesterday's links dump, Kate and I had tickets for the Hold Steady in Albany last night. And since schools are closed next week, we packed SteelyKid and The Pip off to Grandma and Grandpa's, and went to a rock show. If you're…
As many of you know, I'm a big Doctor Who fan. Big enough that I've grabbed all of the episodes of the new series, and its spinoffs, via BitTorrent. (I also buy them on DVD as soon as they become available.) A few folks have asked me what I think of the spinoffs. And I'm sick at home, feeling like…
Last time in our trip through the cold-atom toolbox, we talked about light shifts, where the interaction with a laser changes the internal energy states of an atom in a way that can produce forces on those atoms. This allows the creation of "dipole traps" where cold atoms are held in the focus of a…

oh, yayz! LOLKwax! i juz haz 2 sez diz iz teh BOM!!!!!!!

gottagoezkthx. ;)

I'm honoured! I've been reading and enjoying your blog for ages, but it's the writings of the likes of yourself, Ben Goldacre, PZ, the little black duck, David Colquhoun et al that convinced me I just wasn't worthy to write my own Bad Science / Sceptical blog. You guys just do too good a job...

Then, over the weekend, someone reminded me of the LOLnoun phenomenon and I realised that I suddenly had a purpose, albeit a somewhat childish one ;) On Monday, LOLquacks were hatched into the universe.

Now you've been so very kind as to mention the site here, I'm hoping that some of your regulars might submit a few things as a result...

There's no particular reason, despite the name, why anyone should limit themselves strictly to quackery. All forms of magical thinking, woo-woo and charlatanry-for-profit are fair game so bring 'em on!

Thanks again, Orac :)
