John Farrell has been helping to keep an eye out for outlandish claims made by Tom Bethell, author of the Politically Incorrect Guide to Science. It's hard to know what Bethell's most over-the-top view is, but I'd say two are in strong competition: 1) questioning the existence of an African AIDS epidemic; 2) questioning Einstein and relativity. (It's clear which of these views is the more "politically incorrect." Also, it really tells you something that Bethell's anti-evolutionism doesn't even top the list.)
But in any case, according to Farrell, Bethell isn't endorsing anti-Einstein positions any more. Farrell says we should be pleased by this:
This is reason for optimism. (I know, I know, the cynics are snickering at me.) For science enthusiasts everywhere, this means there is hope for Tom Bethell. If he can change his mind about relativity (even if he doesn't outright admit it), he may also see the light on Darwin as well. (provided he starts contacting sources who are a., still living, and b., still working in the field.)
I guess it all depends on what the meaning of the word "hope" is. I'm still waiting for Bethell to acknowledge that basically the whole world, including not just Bono and Bill Gates but even the Bush administration, is right about AIDS in Africa.

Some news on NASA science cuts, by the way, with the money being, of course, sucked out to support the Shuttle. Same as it ever (for a few decades, anyway) was. Boehlert gives a good sound-bite.
I am just now making a brand-new "specialty" blog to discuss how didactic, far-right ideas are shoehorned into American science fiction (the above url). It's not, in fact, ready to read, but it's only a matter of uploading a few initial posts. I wouldn't say to go there, but I am working along sometimes similar lines and in about a week it should have something.
It might not seem related, but it is. James P. Hogan, for instance, spearheads a Tom Bethell-style effort among science fiction fans and writers to challenge everything he sees as unBiblical. Science, in fact, he claims, is "bunk" as Henry Ford thought history was, except for engineering.
My first big series on my blog will be a dissection of his non-fiction book, which reprises Bethell. In his latest fiction, he's championed Velikovsky, but he also argues with HIV causing AIDS, virtually every environmental danger ever proposed including global warming and ozone depletion, the theor(ies) of Relativity, Evolution, etc. etc.
My main emphasis, I admit, is economic, because American science fiction also uses an extreme - even crackpot - form of market fundamentalism as if it were a body of scientific knowledge, and I feel that that paradigm is at the root of the acceptance of, e.g, flawed tobacco studies, timber studies, global warming studies, etc.

I have doubts about Bethell conceding Evolution. He's been a hardcore anti-Darwinian for decades now, and he's still recycling arguments he made up back then.

While we're on the subject of wacky politically motivated refutations of science, I came across this article the other day at a Marxist website. The author seems to take exception to the Big Bang theory because it is too similar to the Christian creation myth. Have people posted on this? Since when have the Marxists been in on the science bashing?
One of the best points of my college education was that I got to do experiments demonstrating quantum mechanics and general relativity with my own hands.
When someone says "QM can't be true" or "GR can't be true," I can explain how I know from my own personal experience.
I think everyone should get those opportunities in a science class.
