A Big Day in La Jolla

Well, here's the first dispatch from the road....This morning I will be on San Diego's progressive talk radio, KLSD 1360 am, at around 11 am ET, 8 am PT. You should be able to listen live here. The station website is here.

This afternoon, as previously mentioned, I'll be giving a talk on the occasion of my receipt of the "Preserving Core Values in Science" award from the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals. Then at 7:30 pm PT, I'll be doing my first paperback tour talk at Warwick's here in La Jolla. I am trying out a new talk for this occasion...we'll see how it goes.

And then, if I'm still standing, it's off to hang out with Drinking Liberally San Diego....the day sounds like a bit of a whirlwind, perhaps, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Next up: San Francisco on Monday-Tuesday, Sept 11-12....

Having done a lot of traveling and speaking, I've come to know very well that there are better and worse days in terms of how well a talk comes off, how many of the things-that-inevitably-go-wrong actually go really wrong, and so forth. By these lights, yesterday was a near perfect day and a…
Well, it's official: On Wednesday I head out to the left coast for the start of the book tour. The first talk, on Thursday in La Jolla, will be one to remember (for me at least, and hopefully also for the audience). It will take place at the annual conference of the Association of Reproductive…
I've got a busy day tomorrow in the Bay Area. So busy, unfortunately, that I probably won't have any time to track Hurricane Flo, which could be our most damaging storm of the year. I also doubt I'll be watching the perhaps-soon-to-be Tropical Storm Gordon, or keeping an eye on ShanShan in the…
Again, tonight at 11 ET, 8 PT, I will be appearing for an hour on the Karel Show, which airs on ABC Radio, KGO AM 810 out of San Francisco. You should be able to listen live here, or via this website. Hope many of you can tune in....

Hi Chris, I haven't heard back from you about your day in San Francisco, and the interview we talked about. Did you get my email messages? Drop me a note,

Karl

Karl,
I keep emailing you, I don't know why you're not getting them.

Hi Chris,
After reading through your blog and various publications, I really wish I had been able to make it to the lecture and Drinking Liberally meeting tonight!

I'm a climate scientist turned aspiring environmental journalist, and will definitely keep up with this blog and the others that you link to. I didn't know there was a thriving science blogger community out there - I've been too busy reading Daily Kos.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading your book and hopefully catching a lecture some day.

Chris,

Thanks for hanging out with us. We had a great time and look forward to more of your work. Let us know when you want to come back to Drinking Liberally San Diego.

I hope the rest of the book tour goes as well if not better.

Jesse

Hi Chris,

It was great to meet you last night! My blog post is here (sorry, the pic didn't come out well, should have brought the real camera):

My son Jonathan really enjoyed your talk and getting to hang out with you at The Spot as well. We're trying to raise him with good science values!

My favorite Jonathan science story:

When Jonathan was five, we were at the grocery store checking out with one of those registers that gives cahnge separately from the register. jonathan wanted to know how the change machine knew how much change to give us, so he asked the clerk. The clerk started to tell him there were fairies in the change machine to give out change, and Jonathan stamped his foot, turned red, and said, "NO, there are NOT fairies! That's a MACHINE, and I want to know how it WORKS!"

Well, the clerk got upset and laughed and said he didn't really know how it worked, so I rolled my eyes, explained to Jonathan that were wires underneath the checkout stand like the ones on our computers at home that sent signals to the change machine to tell it how much change to dispense. He smiled, looked up at the clerk and said, "Oh, that makes SENSE!" and we went on our way...

Hi Chris, I just moved - same internet service though, so I'm checking every possibility for what's preventing your mail from getting to me. From my internal settings, to email host, and all that. This isn't the first time I've had this problem. If you are getting my messages, then I'll just put my phone number in it and perhaps calling would work better.
Thanks,
Karl
