Wired on Storm World (Or, Which Kicks More Butt, Hurricanes or the Transformers?)

i-d19c5c0a359ff815a6216e7d86b18133-transformers_conceptual_designs_36.jpgThe latest issue of Wired features The Transformers on the cover. And all I can say is, why did Hollywood wait so long to make this movie? Don't they know what I put my parents through when I was six years old and trying to keep pace with friends who'd collected more of these nifty bots than me?

The latest Wired also features a short item about Storm World. You can read it online here, but I vote for the PDF version (here), so you can see the truly awesome graphic design (the best I've seen from my clips so far on the new book).

And thus the question becomes: Which is tougher, bots that transform back and forth into cars and planes, or nature transforming the sun's energy, stored up in the oceans, into a tropical cyclone?

(Hint: A single hurricane can dissipate more power than the world's entire electricity generating capacity as of 2003. See Storm World for the reference.)

It turns out that the "land hurricane" (technically, a super storm, aka extra tropical cyclone or bomb cyclone) may have been the biggest (most energetic) storm hisorically recorded for the region. Of particular interest is the pressure record (the ultimate measure for a storm) but also, the…

It may seem a strange question to be asking in a season that, so far, hasn't yet seen an Atlantic hurricane. But while the weather in any given year can be tricky and unpredictable, there's no doubt that we're currently in an active period for Atlantic storms in general--and now, a new paper (PDF…

It's really only fair to include all screen adapted superheroes in the running so my vote goes to Storm who controls storms and can fly at high speeds.

Clearly, they've waited for our age cohort to reach the point where we have kids, and so are likely to bury the tykes under the deluge of Transformers toys that we wished we could have had when we were young, and which we secretly want to play with ourselves.
