Some tunes for Sunday night

When I was in high school I used to spend my Saturday mornings making mix tapes to play in my 1990 Pontiac Bonneville when I went out on Saturday night. Sure, iPods and other devices that you can dump all your favorite music onto are convenient but there are few things more personal than a mix tape. (Anyone who has made one for a special someone knows what I mean.) Now there's a program that lets you make "mix tapes" that you can put on your blog and I just couldn't resist.

Another one of those perfect moments where Bill O'Reilly shows the world what a buffoon he is, this time from Media Matters. On his radio show recently, he was talking about how kids who fail a civics test should be shipped to Canada. Gee Bill, maybe if the schools actually taught civics classes,…
Students cheat on exams. There's just no getting around it. No matter how secure teachers think they've made their examination processes, there will always be a subset of students who try to find a way around any security procedures and give themselves an advantage, either by hook or by crook.…
Over at The World's Fair, David Ng is sorting his records autobiographically, and encouraging others to do the same: If you make a music mix that is a reflection of your informative years, what would those dozen or so songs be, and maybe more interesting, why? You don't have to be proud of the song…
In addition to making a toy model to show the tipping-point behavior of charged pieces of sticky tape, I spent some time on Tuesday trying to do something quantitative with this. Of course, Tuesday is the one day of the week that I don't teach, and I didn't want to go to campus to do the experiment…

Unless they have royalties covered the RIAA is going to be all over their ass. The fact it's on a private site means nothing, what matters is that it's being shared with the world. I would recommend people find out what relationship these people have with the recording industry. I know that people put songs up on their sites or blogs, but this time the recording industry has a target they can go after.

Are you kidding? I still make "mix tapes", in a sense. Nowadays they just happen to be called "playlists". My Sansa c250 is full of them.
