I've been getting complaints that images aren't showing up at all to some readers. This is strange, because there isn't anything at all special about the html we're using to display images. Anyway, just to rule out some possibilities, here are a few random images. If you've been having problems viewing images, and if you can see any of these, let me know in the comments which ones. If you haven't had any problems, just ignore this post.
Please note that images #4 and #5 should be on the far right side.

Fresh off his earthshaking debunking of the whole of evolutionary biology with his classic "banana" and "coke can" arguments, Ray Comfort has a compelling new argument against atheism: the electricity argument. It's a little story about "three wise fools" who are exposed to electricity for the…
Roger Ebert has a thoughtful post on the problem of not-safe-for-work images. It's a real problem, and it's a curious example of self-imposed censorship built on an artificial fear. I don't care who you are, you've all seen pornography, you've all heard profanity, yet somehow, if even a tasteful…
I'm teaching introductory mechanics for the umpteenth time, using the Matter and Interactions curriculum, as we have for a while. This is going to be my last time teaching out of M&I, though, because last year the department decided to switch to a different book. Starting this winter term, we'…
I imagine after the last few weeks, the idea of storing food isn't seeming quite so crazy to a lot of folks in the country, but still, I hear all the time "I want to start building up a reserve but my husband/sister/mother in law thinks this is nuts." So I thought I would repost this piece, on…
I don't see #4 and #5...
hem, in fact yes I can see all of them, sorry.
I can see 4 and 5 but they are on the opposite side of the column (not underneath the number like the rest)
I can't see images #4 and #5. I'm running Firefox version. 2.0.0.4, on XP professional.
I see 5 images in various positions (and the standard corner octopus).
Firefox V2.0.0.4, Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
That's OK, I'm applying different styles to them to see if the problem is something in the css. All that matters is whether they're visible, not their position on the page.
Nevermind, I'm an idiot. The columns tripped me up, too.
PS I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.2
It might help if those people having problems seeing the images state what OS and browser they are using.
Me? WinXP and Firefox 2.0.0.4 (though I can see them fine)
Also using Firefox 2.0.0.4 and can't see images 4 or 5
dammit, add me to the idiot list, i see them now.
"For a puffed up brain eat frogs, exercise daily, and play with cephalopods." Did I get it right?
I can see all five, Firefox 2.0.0.4
The only 'images' I have problems with are flash animations, but that's because my computer was built shortly after Protostome-Deuterostome split.
Another issue is security settings. On systems running Norton, especially (I don't know if other antivirus/personal firewall packages have the same issues, they may) ad blocking and popup blocking can block some of the images in a regular .html page because, for whatever reason known only to itself, Norton decides it doesn't like the <img> tag. Also, if security settings are anything but "low", Norton may be stopping the browser from sending referrer data to the site, and Seed sites may be set so that without referrer data it won't let the requesting machine download images into the browser.
More often than not - people who are not seeing images have an issue on their end. They should check security settings on their browser, etc. For people on dial-up who are using accelerators - often image quality or display is affected to speed up page loads.
I'm using XP with IE6.0 and I see all of the images.
I can see all of them with Mozilla 1.7.7.
I see them all with Firefox 2.0.0.4.
I'm on a Mac (OSX) with Firefox 2.0.0.4 and I can see all the images...
I can't see #6.
I can see all of them. Firefox 2.0.0.4 and Konqueror 2.5.7 on Kubuntu.
#4 & #5 are RIGHT justified - i.e. not next to their numbers but kicked over to the right side of the display area.
I see all the images on XP with both IE7 and Firefox 2.0.0.4 and on Linux with Firefox 2.0.0.4.
I suspect the problem might be with the settings on the machines of the users who have the problem. Maybe they could try clearing out their cache and setting any options to the defaults.
Okay, now I'm using Windows XP (SP2) with Firefox 2.0.0.4 and I can still see them all...
For the record,
I see all five images, here on the workplace computer.
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900, Novell client 4.90 SP2.
I see all 5 with the latest versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer.
I see 'em all. Netscape 7.2, WinXP.
Initially I could see #3, then I refreshed and could see only #5. Then the next two times I refreshed I couldn't see anything. Refreshed again and could see #5.
This is the only site I've ever (to my knowledge) had this problem with, and I have it with both Firefox and IE. I've cleared my cache, I've checked my internet options, etc. In fact I just cleared my cache in Firefox and opened this page in another tab and could only see image #3.
I'm on Firefox 2.0.0.4, XP Media Center.
Can't see #4 or #5. Using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on a MacBook.
Sorry for the OT, but this is just too enraging/funny/sad/stupid.
Dinesh D'Souza's latest idiotic rant.
His fucking God! now Darwin and Newton are incompatible? What a damn moron. I mean... I mean... what a fucking idiot!
Luckily the first poster who actually knows something about Newton pointed out Newton's misadventures in alchemy, and other stuff. But even if he was (as he probably was) the greatest scientist, it doesn't mean he was perfect. Of course he was religious. Damn these idiots keep thinking that these great scientists are like prophets to us or something.
Can see 1 - 5, brain fish mouth frog sausage.
1 and 2 centered with text centered above.
3 left indent with text left-indented above.
5 and 6 right-indent with text left-indented.
Same results for these browsers-
IE 6 and 7
Firefox 1.5 and 2.0
Mac Firefox 2.0 and Safari 2.0
I couldn't see images whilst at my work place because a proxy server is in place to block various sites, including online dating sites like the meme you posted earlier. As pointed out above, local security settings might also be set to conservative too.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but, when nothing shows, I have scrolled down to find it at the bottom.
Running the HTML (actually XHTML) through a validator reveals 190 errors, so I guess it's not that surprising some people have problems. (But in this case I'm also inclined to suspect ad-blockers etc.) All images visible here in Opera 8.5 anyway.
I can see all 5 with IE6 (work computer); some images I don't get with IE6 (like your G rating) but have never had trouble with Firefox. Checked Firefox, which is on my home laptop, and that's fine too.
The first image, my first thought was.. The Hitler Zombie was out?
I can see them all, correctly positioned, in Firefox 1.5.0.10 in Linux.
I see all images, in their correct places. Firefox 2.0.0.4 on FreeBSD 6.2 release. I adblock aggressively. When I have trouble with scienceblogs, I adblock scripts until the problem goes away - and that strategy has fixed every browser-related problem I've ever had with scienceblogs, and most other sites. Nothing is better at making internet browsing faster or more reliable.
See all five
Mac running Camino 1.5 on OSX 10.4.10
I can see all 5 images both with IE and Opera.
I am running Firefox 2.0.0.4, and I see everything just fine.
I see:
1. An Eldritch Elder One slithering up a winding staircase by an unnamed cliff on a stormy sea.
2. An Outer God treading casually across a series of civilized and ancient star-systems as though their inhabitants were little more than scurrying ants.
3. A tentacle doing something naughty to what looks like a large and diverse collection of college cheerleaders, except cheerleaders are usually more fully-dressed than that.
4. A three-lobed burning eye staring from the insane blackness between stars, laughing at the arrogance of the puling creature that is Man.
5. Shub-Niggurath, the Black Goat of the Wood with a Thousand Young. It appears to be eating the brains out of a hapless hiker. That or it just got an order of In-N-Out.
But then, I always see things like that. Particularly #3.
I see all the pictures, running Firefox 2.0.0.4 and ZoneAlarm Pro Security Suite 7.0.337.000.
Where do you get your pictures? I haven't more than glanced in here before but wandering about I am impressed by your pictures, particularly the cephalopods.
For what it matters, while I can see all five images correctly when visiting the post, on Google Reader they all appear, but all are flush to the left. I'm viewing both the direct post and the google reader verison on firefox 2.0.0.4 on an Intel Mac.
For me the images for 4 and 5 are on the right but the (#4) and (#5) are on the left. IE6 and WinXP SP2.
I can see them all. I particularly enjoy the picture of you sitting at the table in your hot pink Darwin pajamas eating strawberries.
Firefox 2.0.0.4 Windows XP.
I can only see images #1 through #5, and #5 looks like something by Mumenschantz. That can't be right, can it?
Everything is fine with Opera 9.20 running on Linux.
damn i was too slow with "I can't see #6." the rest show up fine. os x, firefox 2.0.0.4
I think it would far more productive just to ask screenshot from people who have problems.
1. Make sure browser window is on top.
2. Press Alt + Print Screen
3. Open Clipboard Viewer (Windows Accessories Menu).
4. Choose Save As from the File menu and give your file a name and save it.
I can see all five pictures - first two centred, third ranged left, last two ranged right - using Firefox 2.0.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.4.9... same story with Safari 2.0.4, Camino 1.5, Opera 9.10, iCab 3.0.2 and Sunrise 1.0.1.
IE 5.2.3 shifted the article and pictures down below the sidebars for some reason, but when I scrolled down far enough to find them, the pictures appeared as in other browsers.
Continued from post 27, I came back a little while ago and could see #1 & 2, but then when I looked at the comments page it was only #2. Now I can only see #4. WTF.
Running Firefox 2.0.0.3 on OS X 10.4.9, all images appear correctly. Same goes with Safari 2.0.4.
No images.
Do you know that images 1 and 2, including the captions, are in thier own div class 3,4 and 5 are only part of the blogmain master div class?
This could make some browsers handle them differently, like if the positional instructions picked up from the smaller containers (holding 1 and 2) are overriding the master, and then sticking. If there are figures missing on a certain browser, look for them off the page or behind an ad or someplace like that.
By the way, I see everything and I'm using Firefox 2.0.3 on Ubuntu Linux 7.04 Feisty Fawn.
I see all 5 images. #1 and #2 are centered, #3 s on the far left, and #4 and #5 are on the far right.
Using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Windows XP.
#s 1 and 2 centered, #3 far left, #s 4 and 5 far right as viewed in Safari 3.0.2 for Windows.
I was ready to tell him anything he wanted ... anything at all. But more than that, I was beginning to believe there were five images.
I see empty boxes 1, 2, 4,and 5. No 3. No pitchas.
I make do with Sissy XP (Home version) and IE (not the latest one which I threw out almost immediately after downloading it - blergh.)
I see all of the images
Ubuntu/Firefox latest versions
i see dead people.
